Offer Description

“Petru Poni” Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry (PPIMC), in Iasi, Romania is an Institute of Excellence of the Romanian Academy. Based on the annual evaluations during the last five years, it has been ranked in the first or second position among all the 65 institutes/centres of the Romanian Academy. This leading position is internationally widely recognised – the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), Philadelphia, USA, lists PPIMC among the “main Romanian actors on the international scientific scene”. In fact, the PPIMC holds the first position in Romania in the ISI classification as a research institute.

An Early Stage Researcher position will be opened at the Centre of Advanced Research in Bionanoconjugates and Biopolymers (IntelCentre), a 5 M Euro Research Infrastructure, supported by the Romanian Sectorial Operational Program for Increasing the Economic Competitiveness. The IntelCentre was established in 2012 and is a department of PPIMC.

OVERALL PURPOSE

The strategic objective of the BioMat4CAST project is to implement a structural change within in the scientific and management paradigms of PPIMC, by setting up a competitive research group in the field of computational chemistry under the supervision of an internationally recognised research leader in the field of molecular and multiscale modelling & simulations, Prof. Aatto Laaksonen (Arrhenius Laboratory, Stockholm University, Sweden).

The successful candidate should have university studies attested by a diploma and a Master degree in chemistry, biochemistry or related disciplines, with basic experience in organic or bio-organic synthesis and preferably already mastering analytical techniques (NMR, MS, FTIR, UV-Vis, etc). Degrees in physics, biotechnology and Informatics are considered on equal basis.

The candidate should be a highly motivated individual, willing to learn and be initiated in computational chemistry and, if successful, will be given opportunity to continue with a PhD in molecular modelling and computational chemistry in close coupling to experiments. Depending on background of the candidate, the PhD work is expected to contain components of machine learning, multi-scale modelling (quantum chemistry and molecular simulations), but also development of new methods and models and therefore knowledge and interest in computer programming is a bonus. The application areas are wide from targeted drug and gene delivery to complex and smart bionanomaterials where data mining and screening and evaluating molecular spaces will be routine.
