About Student and Scholarly Services

Student and Scholarly Services (SASS) provides student administration and services from recruitment and point of enquiry to graduation. This team also delivers wellbeing and scholarly services to students and staff.

Early Childhood Education Services is located within Student and Scholarly Services at The University of Melbourne, comprising the Early Learning Centre, Abbotsford (90 places daily), Queensberry Children's Centre (94 places daily) and Swanston Street Children's Centres (40 places daily). These centres provide early childhood education for approximately 266 children aged 6 months to five years from the University and the surrounding community. The centres operate for a minimum of 48 weeks per year and are open for 10 hours per day. The early childhood education staff team is comprised of approximately 60 staff working either full-time or part-time across the three centres.

About the Role

This role is based at the Early Learning Centre in Abbotsford. As the Early Childhood Teacher (ECT), you will be responsible to the Centre Director for the planning, implementation and evaluation of an exemplary education program for children aged three to five years. You will work independently and/or in a team-teaching situation with an allocated group of children, and undertake supervisory responsibilities of support educators.

In a typical week at work, you will:

  • Utilise your knowledge of learning and assessment theories to promote the participation and inclusion of all children across all discipline areas, including language and literacy, science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM)
  • Take a particular focus on the arts, for their capacity to animate imaginative and aesthetically oriented thinking, feeling and relating
  • Show a commitment to supporting children to respect and care for their world, and in particular to acknowledge and appreciate and the traditional owners of the land, the Wurundjeri and their culture
  • About You

    You will be comfortable working independently to make decisions involving the planning, implementation and evaluation of education and care programs. You'll have experience leading and supervising support educators, mentoring students and delegating responsibilities and tasks, to ensure the effective functioning of an education program.

    Ideally, you will further have:

  • A Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) or an appropriate qualification as prescribed by ACECQA
  • A demonstrated comprehensive understanding of early childhood theory and practice and government regulations that support the delivery of early childhood education
  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of the requirements of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF)
  • A demonstrated commitment to The Arts and Education for Sustainable Development
