Early Career Research Fellow in Ethics in AI (Health Justice)

Faculty of Philosophy, Institute for Ethics in AI, Radcliffe Humanities, ROQ, Woodstock Road, Oxford in association with Corpus Christi College, Oxford Grade 7: £32,817 - £40,322 p.a.

Research Allowance: £2,000

Applications are invited for a full-time Early Career Research Fellow in Ethics in AI at the Faculty of Philosophy, in association with a Research Fellowship at Corpus Christi College, presenting an outstanding opportunity for career advancement in a relatively new field of research. The post is fixed-term for three years.

The University of Oxford has launched a major initiative in Ethics in AI, leading to the establishment of an Institute for Ethics in AI, to be based in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, under the aegis of the Faculty of Philosophy. The Institute will build upon the University's world- class capabilities in the Humanities to lead the study of the ethical implications of artificial intelligence and other new computing technologies. The Early Career Research Fellow will pursue their own research under the supervision of the Ethics in AI Institute Director, John Tasioulas. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary interactions and collaborative research. In the case of an appropriate candidate, this includes collaboration with Professor Michael Parker, at the Wellcome Centre for Ethics and Humanities, and Professor Julian Savulescu, at the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide evidence of exceptional potential for academic research and publication. They need not have already carried out research on Ethics in AI, but must demonstrate evidence of the potential to undertake significant research on AI and health justice (preferably, with a global justice focus) which will contribute to the work of the Institute for Ethics in AI. As a Research Fellow at Corpus Christi College, candidates will be expected to carry out independent research, undertake 3 hours undergraduate teaching per week in Ethics and Practical Ethics and participate in the annual undergraduate admissions exercise.

Successful candidates will hold a doctoral degree in a field relevant to the study of the inter-relations of AI and health justice, or will at least have submitted a doctoral dissertation submitted for examination by the advertised closing date for this position, and will be expected to provide evidence of an outstanding academic research record, appropriate to their career stage. Also essential are excellent research skills, and the ability to work independently and without close supervision.

Applications for this post are to be made online.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on 25 June 2021
