Environmental Research and Innovation department

The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department, made up of 200 life science, environmental science and information technology researchers and engineers, provides the interdisciplinary knowledge, expertise and technologies to lead solutions including the major environmental challenges facing society, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

The selected applicant will join ERIN's Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) Unit which is developing knowledge, transferable (software) technologies and practical methods for the integrative evaluation and management of the sustainability and toxicological risks of human driven systems. Its final purpose is to foster sustainable, technology driven eco-innovation in industry and to support sustainability- oriented policy making.

Within the SUSTAIN Unit, the applicant will be incorporated in the Environmental Health (EH) research group. The activities conducted within the EH group develop complex 3D - in vitro models for toxicological testing as a major research activity. Such models undergo in house pre-validation under laboratory conditions and are applied to a wide range of contaminants from chemicals to nanomaterials. These models are then applied within nationally and internationally funded research projects and in collaborative research projects with industry.

How will you contribute?

You will work within the EH group to further develop existing relevant complex 3D in vitro models, as well as pre-validate and apply new in vitro models with a focus on pulmonary toxicity. Your main tasks will be the exploration in how existing microscopy techniques can be applied to better understand the results observed in complex in vitro models. To this end, you will contribute to the hazard assessment of chemicals using the models applying the available in vitro models.

You will support the European project CHIASMA “Accessible Innovative Methods for the Safety & Sustainability Assessment of Chemicals & Materials” by:

  • Conducting systematic literature reviews;
  • Identifying new concepts and proposals for cell models;
  • Developing strategies to apply microscopy techniques to complex in vitro models;
  • Experimenting in the CHIASMA project under the supervision and mentorship of more senior staff;
  • Analysing experimental results to validate developments;
  • Managing the daily research activities allowing the smooth progress of the PhD project;
  • Collaborating with other researchers to promote interdisciplinary activities;
  • Assisting in the preparation of reports and presentations;
  • Making presentations at workshops with guidance and prior internal review;
  • Participating in conferences and workshops;
  • Disseminating and publishing research results in top-ranked scientific journals and conferences;
  • Contributing to the valorisation of RDI results.

    You should have a MSc in biology, molecular biology, cell biology or similar and you should have done a MSc thesis in the field of cell culture.

    You should possess expertise in cell culture, molecular biology, and an interest in microscopy techniques. Valuable experience would include 3D in vitro models, handling of nanomaterials and chemicals and basic cell toxicology.
