Department Center for Civic Engagement Work Schedule Position Summary

At Walkways to Westminster, Westminster College students serve as mentors to support youth in areas regarding academic success, college preparation, career planning, English as a second language and personal success. Applicants should be highly motivated undergraduate or graduate students who want to encourage college-going aspiration for 6- 12th-grade students in the South Salt Lake area. This is a self-directed roll without the constant presence of a supervisor. The student is expected to conduct themselves appropriately when engaging with the k-12 students, community partners, and Westminster faculty, staff, and students.

On any given day you might be helping a student with their science project, playing a game of basketball, engaging in a college access program or helping them fill out college applications.

  • Account for documents and data necessary for applying for and reporting back to annual grants and donors. You will be trained by and assisted in doing so by your supervisor(s).

  • Collaborate effectively with our community partners. You may be expected to attend partnership meetings, and should frequently check your email and make an effort to communicate with the teachers at your placement school should any change of plans come up.

  • Develop curriculum suitable for K-12 youth
  • Complete written and verbal learning reflections which your supervisor will use to improve the program for the coming years. These will be done at your bi-monthly staff meetings.
  • Plan projects, including service opportunities, field trips, etc.
  • Working with faculty and staff to arrange various activities for campus visitations/field trips
  • Collaborate with community partners to ensure all liability forms are completed
  • Job Requirements

  • Commit to mentoring with Walkways to Westminster preferably twice per week (excluding school holidays).

  • Most be comfortable working with minors and understand what the responsibility of working with vulnerable populations entails.

  • Provide their own transportation (bus, car, bike, etc.) to their off- campus site (many sites have carpools available).
  • Attend bi-monthly staff meetings.
  • Pass a South Salt Lake City background check (no fee).
  • Complete an initial mentor training that encompasses curriculum development, classroom management, best practices when working with youth, reciprocity when performing community engagement. Continued trainings will also be scheduled throughout the year.
  • Required Qualifications
