Doctoral Researcher in uncertainty, risks analysis and resilience modelling for smart/autonomous ship technology

We are looking for candidates for a doctoral candidate in the Research Group on Safe and Efficient Marine and Ship Systems at the Department of Mechanical Engineering (Marine and Arctic Technology). The Finnish maritime cluster is currently developing strategies to develop a resilient and sustainable transition of maritime traffic operations. Diverse maritime stakeholders are joining efforts to introduce advanced autonomous technologies to enable a safe, clean and smart operation of the maritime ecosystem. At Aalto Marine and Arctic Technology, our research group has executed extensive research on the analysis of risk and safety for the foreseen operational context of advanced ship concepts and how these concepts and the entire maritime traffic ecosystem can remain resilient and sustainable.

In this call, we are looking for a doctoral researcher to work on the development of “risk analysis and risk management models to ensure the controllability of the safety of critical elements of smart/autonomous ships and marine systems”. The research aims at representing the resilient levels of those technologies when integrated into specific smart ship concepts and smart shipping services. The doctoral researcher will be working within our GYROSCOPE (Risks and opportunities of digital solutions in sustainable transition to carbon-neutral marine logistics). GYROSCOPE aims at developing digital foresight platforms and tools to ensure a resilient and sustainable transition of the Finnish maritime cluster. The project aims at developing strategic policy pathways for a sustainable transition to future marine logistics to help society to identify the critical steps in achieving the low- carbon and smart shipping targets of the future. GYROSCOPE consortium includes the Kotka Maritime Research Center, the University of Helsinki, the University of Turku and Aalto University, the project is funded by the Academy of Finland with the European Union's Resilience and Recovery Facility (RRF) and Finland's sustainable growth program.

The call is open for candidates with a good understanding and strong interest on the study and research of the foundations of risk analysis, risk management, systems modelling and resilience engineering. A suitable background may come from mechanical engineering, marine engineering, naval architecture, industrial engineering or related disciplines. Knowledge of safety system engineering and machine learning represents an advantage for this position. The applicant for the position must have a Master's degree and must fulfil the requirements for doctoral students at the Aalto University, School of Engineering (see https: // www. aalto.fi/en/study-options/aalto- doctoral-programme-in-engineering ).

Employment

The position is at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and may include some work as a teaching assistant in our courses. The expected duration of doctoral studies is four years, but a contract is first made for one year, and the extension is subject to the advance of studies and research. The salary is according to the salary system of Aalto University.
