  • Mathematics / Natural Sciences
  • Subjects Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology Description The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute – (HKI, www. leibniz-hki.de) investigates the pathobiology of human-pathogenic fungi and identifies targets for the development of novel natural product-based antibiotics. The Department of Molecular and Applied Microbiology invites talented and highly gifted candidates to apply for a PhD position starting from October 2021 for three years initially.

The successful candidate will work within the framework of a DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center / Transregio 124 “FungiNet” (https: // www. funginet.de) on the surface proteins of the human-pathogenic fungi Lichtheimia corymbifera and Aspergillus fumigatus as virulence determinant.

Main topics of the project may include: • Elucidation of the mechanisms allowing for long-term survival of spores in the phagosome of macrophages • Genetic, proteomic and microscopic characterization of phagosomes containing spores of L. corymbifera and A. fumigatus • Characterization of spore and host proteins involved in delayed phagosome maturation • Screening and testing of compounds that interfere with the phagosome maturation process

Our requirements: PhD in natural sciences/life sciences (Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology). Good knowledge in standard techniques of microbiology, immunology, biochemistry and molecular biology is expected. Experience in cell culture, fluorescence microscopy and CRISPR/Cas-methods would be preferable.
