Karolinska Institute Stockholm

Sweden

November 27, 2021

Description

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

Our research group is a part of the Department of Medicine Solna, and our research aims to contribute to improved surveillance and management for people living with systemic lupus erythematosus. Moreover, the research group also focuses on research within medical pedagogy. The Department of Medicine Solna is one of the largest departments at the Karolinska Institutet. The core activities of the Department of Medicine Solna are clinical and undergraduate education for medical as well as biomedical students, post-graduate education including at present 200 registered PhD students, and research in different areas of biomedicine.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The overall purpose of the doctoral project is to develop and compare different modalities, i.e. a social robotic (Furhat) and a semi-linear platform (Virtual Interactive Cases; VIC) for virtual patient cases, with the goal of enhancing clinical reasoning, interprofessional collaboration and communication in health professions education at KI. We will investigate the following specific research issues:

  • The additive value of Furhat compared with VIC in terms of observed interactions that foster acquirement of clinical reasoning skills.
  • The additive value of Furhat compared with VIC in terms of observed interactions that foster empathy towards the presented patient.
  • The additive value of Furhat compared with VIC in terms of observed interactions that foster interprofessional collaboration, using recorded sessions of medical and nursing students using the modality in pairs.
  • The additive value of Furhat compared with VIC in terms of observed interactions that foster acquirement of communication, tolerance and stress management skills, through presentation of the same patient scenario through e.g. different behavioural or reaction patterns (e.g. the angry patient, the silent patient, and the dissatisfied patient), different cultural backgrounds, or self-identification patterns.
  • The doctoral student is going to work with the creation of virtual patient cases within Furhat and VIC. The student will be involved in the design of the studies, including construction of data collection systems. The student will be responsible for collecting and structuring data needed for the studies, e.g. observations of interactions that foster acquirement of clinical reasoning skills, increased empathy, interprofessional collaboration and communication skills. The student will be responsible for drafting the manuscripts that will be derived from the project.

The student will attend group meetings and journal clubs, be given opportunities to present the research in local meeting as well as national and international conferences. Apart from work directly related to the studies of the doctoral project, the student is expected to contribute to all functions and duties of the group.
