doctoral candidate (m/w/d) in paleoceanography and chemical oceanography, E13

Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg

Description

The Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at the University of Oldenburg invites applications for the position of a

doctoral candidate (m/w/d) in paleoceanography and chemical oceanography

(salary according to E13 TV-L, 75%)

The position is limited to 26 months. Start: March 1 st, 2022

The ICBM is an interdisciplinary research institute for fundamental and applied marine research. The internationally renowned institute aims at understanding the function of marine environmental systems through close cooperation of the various scientific disciplines (chemistry, biology, physics, mathematical modelling) of its more than 20 research groups.

The working group Marine Isotope Geochemistry uses stable and radiogenic isotope systems (Si, Fe, Nd, Sr, Pb) to investigate biogeochemical processes, element cycles and inputs to the ocean, and to reconstruct changes in the marine environment during past intervals of climate change.

The PhD position is part of the research project PaläoTaNZ ( Paleoceanography of the southern Tasman Sea and glacier history of the South Island of New Zealand) that is based on sediment cores and seawater samples to be collected on a research cruise to the Tasman Sea (funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, BMBF). The project is a collaborative effort that investigates the paleoceanographic and -climatic history of the southern Tasman Sea over the last glacial-interglacial cycles and modern trace metal and radiogenic isotope distributions in the Tasman Sea water column. The PhD project will focus on neodymium (Nd) isotopes and rare earth elements in marine authigenic phases for the reconstruction of past intermediate and deep water circulation, and in modern seawater to identify element fluxes to the ocean and water mass signatures. Ideally, the PhD student will participate in the research cruise on R/V SONNE (April-May 2022) and support sediment and seawater sampling.

Responsibilities of the successful candidate include participation in sediment sampling, the processing and analysis of samples for rare earth element concentrations and Nd isotopes, as well as the documentation, interpretation and publication of the data and results in collaboration with other project partners.

Recruitment requirements include a qualifying university degree (M.Sc. or diploma (not of a University of Applied Sciences)) in earth sciences, analytical chemistry or a related field. A strong background in inorganic- geochemical sample processing and analysis, preferably in the mass spectrometric analysis of trace elements and metal isotopes, are advantageous. Very good English language skills (written and spoken), the willingness to carry out field work also under strenuous conditions and strong interest in collaborative research are required.

The University of Oldenburg is dedicated to increasing the percentage of female employees in the field of science. Therefore, female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. In accordance to §21 Section 3 NHG female candidates with equal qualifications will be preferentially considered. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in case of equal qualification.

For queries regarding this position, please contact Prof. Dr. Katharina Pahnke ( k.pahnke@icbm.de). Please send your application including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, certificates and contact information of up to three references in a single document preferably by email to mig-stellen@uol.de by January 30, 2022.
