Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

The mission of the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at UNCG is to assist students in reaching their academic goals by serving as a primary advocate for students and families as we assist in removing barriers to receiving financial assistance. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships works to meet these goals by embracing technology, reviewing and improving procedures, and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.

The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships staff is here to assist students in the office on a walk-in basis, via email, via Zoom, or by phone. In an effort to contact students as quickly and efficiently as possible about their status in the financial aid process, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships uses email as the primary means of communicating with students.

Position Summary

The Director of the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships is responsible for the overall operations of the office, including setting policy and procedure, monitoring fund expenditures, and providing staff training and supervision. The Director is also responsible for communicating the activities of the office to federal and state authorities, the University community, the student body, outside agencies, and the media. The position must ensure coordination of effort with all other University departments to assure that proper procedures are followed in compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations. The Director is charged with keeping current on all federal, state, and institutional rules and regulations and training the Financial Aid and Scholarships office staff to implement these regulations into office policy and procedure. The Director is also responsible for maintaining a “student-centered operation” and for providing vision to the office operation.

The Director ensures the University has exception-free audits and program reviews by remaining current on all federal and state laws and regulations that pertain to the programs administered by the office, implementing and/or modifying office procedures to comply with those laws and regulations, making certain that all required reports are prepared accurately and in a timely manner, and serving as a liaison to the financial aid audit team.

The Director contributes to the accomplishment of the enrollment management objectives of the University by recommending data-driven financial aid strategies within the framework of federal and state regulations that are consistent with those objectives and by administering financial aid, and scholarship programs that support student recruitment and retention.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree and a minimum of 10 years of financial aid experience with progressive responsibilities.
  • Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of federal and state assistance programs and their accompanying regulations.
  • Current knowledge of financial aid theory and practice for graduate and undergraduate populations.
  • Supervisory and leadership skills to direct and coordinate multi-level work groups.
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse populations including staff, students, parents and other constituencies.
  • Experience in coordinating Financial Aid Office functions with other campus departments and services.

  • Responsible for overall operations of the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, including setting policy and procedure, monitoring fund expenditures, and providing staff training and supervision. Manage all written publications and general interactions with customers.
  • Assist with the development of policies and procedures for all phases of operations.
  • Schedule, develop, and implement staff training opportunities.
  • Set short-term and long-range goals. Manage operating budget resources.
  • Mediate student grievances.
  • Ensures the Banner Financial Aid module and scholarship system software are used effectively, overseeing the implementation of any new features into the standard business practice as upgrades are installed.
  • Serve as a liaison between office personnel, vendors, IT, and other offices within the University in relation to financial aid data.

  • Ensure coordination of effort with all other University departments to assure that proper procedures are followed in compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations.
  • Keep current on all federal, state, and institutional rules and regulations and train the Financial Aid and Scholarship office staff to implement these regulations into office policy and procedure.
  • Act as the central University representative for all audit activities associated with the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office operation.
  • Ensures compliance with NCAA and federal and state aid regulations by coordinating the administration of NCAA Division I financial aid programs with the Office of Athletics.

  • Provide long-term vision and goal identification for the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships operations through upward and downward communication within the University administrative organization.
  • Coordinate the work of professional staff members to see that the individual needs of each student are met.
  • Develop and conduct, as necessary, research projects that will assist with solving problems and advancing knowledge in the field of financial aid.
  • Research and evaluate the effects that changing federal and/or state regulations governing the administration of financial aid may have on the student body at the University.
  • Conduct studies of costs incurred by students so that adequate costs of attendance figures may be used in determining need, and conduct research to establish the impact of financial aid policies and procedures on enrollment and retention at the University.
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required by Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management.
