Student Accounting is deeply committed to delivering the highest quality of innovative student account and financial services to the UNT community, helping ensure UNT's enrollment and financial success. Our team is responsible for assessing and collecting all tuition and fees, processing waivers, exemptions, veterans educational benefits, third-party sponsorships, tuition benefit programs, refunds, departmental deposit and financial services, and tax reporting.
Position Overview
The Director, Student Accounting is responsible for providing strategic management and operational oversight of all student accounts receivable, application of financial aid/scholarship disbursements to student accounts, refunding/federal cash management compliance, tax reporting, sponsored billing, waiver/exemption, and university ID card services within Student Accounting.
The Director, Student Accounting plays a key role in ensuring over $500M (annually) in financial functions within their scope of control are executed accurately, efficiently, and in a compliant manner in order to enhance services provided to students, campus partners, and the university. The position will be responsible for highly complex processes that have significant financial impacts to all students, divisions, departments, and the university as a whole. The position reports to the Assistant Vice President, Student Accounting.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in related field and seven years of closely related professional experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
A preferred candidate will have prior higher education experience in a student accounting/bursar's office or experience working with large-scale financial transactions in a higher education, financial, or audit environment. An optimal candidate will have extensive knowledge of University or higher education laws (federal/state), regulations, and policies/procedures related to student accounting (tuition, aid disbursement/refunding, payment, tax reporting processes). In addition, a preferred candidate will have experience leading process improvement initiatives across teams to improve service delivery.

Job Duties
o
Provide management and leadership in the operation of over $500M in various student accounts receivable functions each year, including internal/external collections, posting financial aid/scholarship disbursements, refunding, tax reporting, sponsored billing, waiver/exemptions, tuition benefits, veteran financials, and university ID cards.
Serves as the director for the Student Accounts/Refunds/Tax, Sponsored Billing/Waivers/Exemptions/Benefits, and Collections/University ID Card groups within Student Accounting. Provide strategic leadership, guidance, and prioritization for the work of multiple individuals in the Assistant/Associate Director, Student Accounting position.

Manages the overall planning, design, execution, and compliance monitoring for the university-wide student accounts receivable processes, internal/external collections, state warrant holds/attorney general actions, and the determination of bad debt expense for items deemed as uncollectible based on Texas Education Code, Texas Administrative Code, and UNT System policies and procedures.
Provides strategic oversight and leadership for all student collection services. Manages contractual relationships with external collection agencies throughout the year. Develops collection metrics to ensure compliance, agency performance, and alignment with institutional need and contract agreements.

Provides strategic leadership in the effective and innovative operation of Third-Party Sponsored Billing, Waivers, Exemptions, Tuition Benefits, and Veteran Financials. Manages a diverse portfolio of external sponsor agencies, internal benefit programs (ETB/TBP), and federal/state benefits. Designs programs, policies, and framework for managing these programs effectively while leveraging technology solutions to enhance processing, compliance, and reporting capabilities. Ensures invoicing, collection of third-party payments, and processing of credit balances is managed effectively and efficiently.

Implements and maintains an effective University ID Card operation for students, faculty, staff, and guests. Designs ID card services and strategies for crucial university services during Orientation, Move-In Weekend, etc. Ensures ID Card operations drive the university forward into an electronic access model, through use of TruCredential and the Classroom eLock Technology.
o
Manages contracts, services, and compliance for all third-party refunding applications and bank integrations to ensure vendors provide compliant, financially responsible, and student friendly mechanisms to deliver over $80M in refunds each year. Oversees the compliance functions used to meet the requirements set forth by the Federal Cash Management Regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Education (34 CFR 668).

Serves as a member of the Student Accounting senior leadership team and a leader of multiple teams within the department, representing the department and its leadership in all interactions. Works collaboratively with other leaders to ensure department and university goals are achieved.
Effectively provides professional guidance and coaching to team members, including those in a management role, to promote understanding and connectedness between team/department functions and the success of the university as a whole. Remains focused on the impact of the position as a senior leader within the department with the ability to directly or indirectly influence the actions of team members. Ensures actions taken provide a positive example for others to emulate.

Develop metrics, dashboards, data feeds, and tracking mechanisms across portfolio of services rendered by direct-report teams to surface clear, actionable data which can be used to drive performance, aid in decisions, and design programs that enable student and university financial success. Serves as a lead subject matter expert for the functional and data processes for direct-report teams, while working collaboratively with other teams and campus partners to identify integrations with other systems and business processes.

Champion opportunities to improve financial processes, student experiences, and employee engagement through process reviews, continuous feedback, and cross-functional collaboration with Student Accounting team members as well as campus partners. Presents to large and small audiences regarding Student Accounting services, programs, and projects.

Participates in the development of department operating and auxiliary budgets (Student Accounting/ID Cards), including revenue projections, payroll planning/expenditures, equipment maintenance/replacement, etc.
o
Manages a complex workload (self + teams) involving competing deadlines, large and small scale projects, and necessary risk assessments to ensure department and university success. Demonstrates initiative by taking action to provide service within scope of position and actively seeks additional assignments to enhance and optimize financial services offered to students.

Collaborate with the AVP, Student Accounting to actively support initiatives to engage all employees in the workplace. Provides timely communication to team members.
