Job Summary/Basic Function
About This Role:
The Director of the Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum provides dynamic
leadership to direct policy making, planning, organization, staffing, and
operations for a complex of 17 replica buildings representing life during the
boom years of the first Spindletop oil boom, 1890-1910. The Director works
closely with the administration of Lamar University, an Advisory Council,
museum staff and volunteers to refine, develop, and implement programs for the
museum's fundraising, exhibitions, collections management, educational
activities, events and community outreach.
What You'll Do – Position Duties
As a member of our team, you will have an impact on our clients through
accomplishment of the following responsibilities:
Reports to the Chief of Operations.
Works in conjunction with university administration to develop the
strategic direction and establish initiatives to fulfill the mission of
the Museum and increase local, statewide, national and international
awareness and prominence.
Manages, secures and maintains the property and facilities of the Museum,
as well as the collections held in public trust.
Directs the museum's operations, to include development, education and
public programming, finance, external communications, event management and
staffing.
Manages, leads and develops a part-time staff of four, volunteers,
contractors and consultants.
Directs the overall development of public relations and marketing
initiatives. Develops an effective communications plan to raise the
profile of the museum.
Serves as spokesperson and chief advocate for the Museum. Establishes
strong partnerships in the community. Enhances the Museum's public image
to expand interest and support.

Minimum Qualifications
What You'll Need to Succeed – Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required, preferably in history, museum studies,
communications, business management, or related field.
Customer Service Excellence.
Ability to provide strong leadership, vision and strategic direction.
Experience developing and implementing strategic plans.
Demonstrated knowledge of standards and best practices for museums, non-
profits, or similar organizations, as well as a history of involvement in
relevant professional organizations.
Knowledge of fundraising and audience development with demonstrated grant
writing abilities.
Demonstrated excellence in writing and public speaking.
Proven ability to work cooperatively, diplomatically, and effectively with
volunteers and in community relations and outreach capacities.
Competence in managing museum operations, including personnel matters.
Demonstrated ability to supervise, as well as to work successfully with
museum staff, volunteers, and diverse public constituencies.
Evidence of success in developing, managing, and growing an annual
operating budget.
Strong business management skills, including planning, time management,
and decision making skills.
Working knowledge of spreadsheet, database, email, calendar/scheduling and
word processing software. Experience with web content management systems a
plus.
