Job Description Summary:

The Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) is seeking a Director, Relationship Management for The George Washington University Research & Relationship Management (RRM) team. DAR is responsible for leading the university's alumni engagement and fundraising efforts and seeks to promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the university community, including alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, corporations and foundations, patients, and other friends. Our goal is to advance GW's mission of excellence in education, research, scholarship, and patient care.

The Director, Relationship Management is a passionate member of the RRM leadership cohort, helping create and enact formal vision for prospect development at GW. A strategic partner and trusted advisor, incumbent espouses a dynamic partnership with staff across DAR. This position is the business owner and lead for DAR's robust relationship management system: setting the vision for this area, guiding the relationship management program toward best- in-class services, and proactively identifying and seeking creative solutions to complex challenges. The role partners closely with colleagues across RRM, requiring a working knowledge of prospect research best practices.

This position sets policy, protocol, and procedure at the macro level for DAR's relationship management program. Core responsibilities are to create and direct/execute complex analyses around relationship management successes and opportunities, philanthropic patterns, data trends, etc., and communicate findings in insightful and actionable ways to drive data-based decision making at all levels of DAR, including divisional and University leadership. Incumbent conceptualizes and guides/develops documentation of relationship management policies, protocols, and business practices, communicating effectively to a number of audiences through a variety of media on key findings, trends, solutions, and procedures. This role also manages a slate of client relationships.

Incumbent supervises and develops a staff of prospect development professionals to ensure the highest quality work for all university clients. As an RRM leader, this role fosters enthusiasm among team members and clients, advocating for RRM and enhancing the team's work through incumbent's own professional development activities and that which incumbent provides to the team, directly and indirectly, through training, coaching, and mentoring.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 8 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 6 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of corporate and foundation fundraising.
  • Prior management experience with a focus on building and maintaining cohesive, positive team environment; comfort and aptitude in delegating appropriate work and providing feedback to staff.
  • Experience in visionary leadership; insatiably drives own learning and motivates team to do the same. Skill in using data to inform strategy, planning, resource allocation, execution, and measurement of fundraising activity and performance.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including diplomacy required to function effectively among gift officers and others to bring projects, requests, and recommendations of all sizes to completion.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing strategic partnerships with all levels of staff to influence results. Ability to convey information to multiple audiences in a clear and concise manner.
  • Mastery of the development cycle, with advanced knowledge of the role of prospect development within the cycle. Proficiency in Apra's Body of Knowledge Relationship Management domain with general understanding of Data Analytics, Campaigns, and Prospect Research domains.
  • Demonstrated record of professional involvement in industry organizations.
  • Strong project management and problem-solving skills; demonstrated ability to work in a demanding, dynamic environment. Skill in developing plans with clear vision, goals, strategies, and tactics.
  • Proficiency in prioritizing work, including negotiating and managing multiple, diverse, and competing priorities while meeting deadlines. Skillfully identifies and evaluates diverse strategies. Demonstrates accountability for outcomes.
  • Proficient computer skills. Experience working with a relational database a necessity (preferably Ellucian Advance), as well as the Microsoft Office suite of products. Demonstrated skill in deciding which technology will communicate findings effectively.
  • Ability to deal with highly sensitive information, maintain confidentiality, and exercise a high degree of judgment and discretion. Ability to apply themes from ethics statements by Apra, Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and other related associations.
  • Typical Hiring Range $70,545.57 - $102,353.95
