Director, Priestley Centre for Climate Futures

Are you an outstanding leader with an international profile, a track record of innovation across research, knowledge exchange and education to deliver global impact? Do you have experience of developing new structures and strategies that will enable you to establish and lead a new institute that will directly tackle the climate crisis, reduce inequalities and improve society? Are you a confident leader capable of building excellent working relationships to establish large-scale, radical, global collaborations? Do you have the confidence and experience to establish novel approaches to inspire and develop the leaders and workforce of tomorrow, helping to create a valued, collaborative and adaptable environment where existing talent and skills are nurtured?

The University Strategic Plan (2020-2030) sets out an ambition to place the University of Leeds at the heart of a global network, finding innovative solutions to regional, national, and global challenges. Key to delivering this vision is the development and launch of four Futures Institutes (Climate, Health, Education and Societal) that will exemplify our strategy to combine research and innovation, knowledge exchange, and education, to deliver global impact. The Futures Institutes will generate additional academic outcomes that could not be achieved by individual faculties or schools, through a focus on interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary collaborations; and will enhance the University's external standing and impact in major global challenge areas. The institutes will remove barriers for inter-faculty research and postgraduate education collaborations and develop recognised centres of excellence for tackling global challenges and driving world-changing research and education through impactful international partnerships.

The Priestley Centre for Climate Futures mission is to collaboratively design and deliver just and actionable climate solutions by integrating research, innovation, policy and education to imagine, influence and shape a better future for our communities, our region and the world. Its focus is on genuine impact on climate change by delivering on-the-ground implementation and impact. It will also support the delivery of the University's Climate Plan.

Reporting to the Principal Deputy Vice-Chancellor (PDVC), you will be responsible for academic leadership to develop, launch and then direct the Priestley Centre for Climate Futures. You will work collaboratively with the Pro-Deans for Research and Innovation, Student Education and International, senior professional services colleagues, and colleagues across the University, and will have responsibility for the development of the Institute's strategy and implementation plan. You will play a key leadership role in developing and delivering initiatives to support and enhance the research, innovation, education and knowledge exchange of the University on a sustained basis.

The successful candidate will need to quickly build networks across the University and externally, and work effectively in a complex and changing environment. Your approach will be considerate, persuasive and engaging, bringing key stakeholders along with you, and demonstrating appropriate political nous. You will ensure strategic alignment and drive transformational change across the institution. You will be recognised internationally as a leader across climate change research and education, although your leadership experience should go beyond research, and cover aspects of influencing policy, innovation and education.
