Position Details

The Davison Health Center provides an array of services for Wesleyan students including sick visits, allergy and immunization services, travel consultation, laboratory and dispensary services, and specialty clinics for gynecological care, sexual health and wellness services, HIV counseling and testing, and nutrition counseling.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students (DOS) the Director oversees the Davison Health Center and is responsible for leadership in the development, implementation and assessment of ambulatory services, health center programming, policies and procedures, budget management and long-range planning for the future of the center. The Director ensures compliance with state licensure and national accreditation standards.

The Director supervises the Medical Director, Director of Counseling and Psychological Services, Medical Office Manager, nursing coordinator and a part-time nutritionist, and has indirect supervision of all other health center staff.

The Director works collaboratively with many campus partners including the Office of the VPSA, Residential Life, Public Safety, Athletics, International and Graduate Student Services and is often first point of contact for seeking or relaying information.

Responsibilities include:

Budget and Insurance

  • Assist with the negotiation (through a 11 school consortium) and coordination of student health insurance services.
  • Maintain hard waiver insurance compliance for all students.
  • Manage over one million dollar annual budget specifically, including fees for services, ledger billing and reconciling with student insurance plan for recovery charges.
  • Manage and approve funds for high need students.
  • Health Center Administration

  • Administration and recertification of State of CT licensed infirmary/student health center.
  • Develop policies and procedures governing ambulatory health care services.
  • Primary contact with campus partners to effectively communicate and manage student health services related issues.
  • Respond to and triage questions and queries from students and parents.
  • Continuously assess technological needs of the center and make recommendations that follow health technology trends and increase efficiency of the center.
  • Make data informed recommendation by continuously surveying and assessing patient satisfaction and utilization trends reports.
  • Continuously assess and make recommendations regarding maintenance and renovation of the Davison Health Center facility.
  • Maintain awareness of trends in higher education health and best practices to run a health center.
  • Act a resource for any center employee with concerns, or those seeking guidance.
  • Manage solarium reservations.
  • Actively participate in quality improvement and risk management committees.
  • Manage personnel file, physical exams, policy and procedure manual.
  • Compile annual reports from all health offices.
  • Provide schedule for staffing and meetings.
  • Supervise staff, provide feedback and ensure professional development opportunities exist for clinical staff and assist with their participation.
  • Compliance with State Regulations

  • Manage annual flu shot clinic.
  • Manage opiod compliance.
  • Monitor immunization fridge.
  • Manage CT Prescription Monitoring system compliance for narcotic medication given to students.
  • Work with the office of Study Abroad on student vaccination requirements as students travel abroad.
  • Ensure compliance with Clery act guidelines.
  • Work with GLS to provide immunization paperwork support.
  • Renew licenses, DEA and medical subscriptions, methamphetamine renewal.
  • Outreach and Education

  • Provide oversight for the Student Health Advisory committee.
  • Serve as primary contact and resource person for student organizations.
  • Advocate as appropriate for student concerns regarding student health services.
  • Oversee services and programs that address the health care, wellness, and educational needs of Wesleyan students.
  • Participate in programs sponsored by the CT Healthy Campus Initiative, New England College Health Association and American College Health Association.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    This position is required to work on campus.

    (Relocation assistance to CT is available for those who qualify).

    Minimum Qualifications

    Advanced degree in a public health, healthcare administration, business administration or a related field and a minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in managing an ambulatory outpatient center, health center, private practice, community health center or related work on an equivalent combination of education training and experience.

    Knowledge of federal and state laws, accrediting body's regulations and standards, quality improvement and electronic medical records management

    Demonstrated effectiveness in budgeting; staff supervision; facility operations; and strategic planning.

    Demonstrated ability in cultivating relationships, collaborating, and developing partnerships with a range of stakeholders.

    Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of health center administration,

    Demonstrated ability to track, compile and present pertinent data to monitor performance and create forecasts related to short and long term departmental objectives

    Demonstrated skill in effective problem identification and resolution as a method of sound decision making

    Demonstrated problem solving and critical thinking skills

    Knowledge of health and wellness programming

    Experience managing health services related issues and concerns.

    Effective communication skills

    Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with

    individuals of different backgrounds.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience working with college student population
