Job Description Summary:
The Institute for Trustworthy AI in Law & Society (TRAILS) is the first
organization to integrate artificial intelligence participation, technology,
and governance during the design, development, deployment, and oversight of AI
systems. We investigate what trust in AI looks like, how to create technical
AI solutions that build trust, and which policy models are effective in
sustaining trust. TRAILS is a partnership between the University of Maryland,
George Washington University, and Morgan State University.
TRAILS and aligned trustworthy AI efforts with GW are seeking a Director of
Outreach and Strategy who will play a vital role in building a long-term
sustainable institute, by promoting activities including, but not limited to,
fundraising from philanthropic donors and corporate sponsors, establishing
executive education and other tuition generating programs, conducting high-
profile convening activities, identifying research grant opportunities for
faculty, and conducting activities to promote the public profile of the TRAILS
Institute, and GW Trustworthy AI efforts as embodied in a corresponding GW
This position will be responsible for executing various outreach initiatives,
fostering collaboration among stakeholders, and serving as a representative of
the institute in engaging with policy, industry, and academic communities.
This will require close coordination with TRAILS and leadership at GWU to
ensure seamless execution of institute activities.
1. Promote TRAILS and affiliated GW initiatives' activities within the
industry and policy communities, ensuring broader outreach and engagement:
Develop and implement strategies to increase awareness and visibility of
the TRAILS and affiliated initiatives at GW among relevant stakeholders.
Work with GW and TRAILS leadership and faculty to ensure representation of
the institute and affiliated faculty at conferences, meetings, and other
relevant events, including delivering presentations and engaging in panel
Cultivate relationships between institute leadership and key stakeholders,
including policymakers, industry leaders, academic experts, and media
outlets, to position TRAILS and affiliated initiatives at GW as thought
leaders and valuable partners.
Actively participate in relevant professional networks and organizations
to stay abreast of industry trends and opportunities.
Coordinate with GW Career Services to engage with companies and agencies
on their talent pipeline and workforce development needs.
Actively engage with policy and industry leaders to foster relationships
and encourage their involvement with the TRAILS and GW Institutes.
2. Contribute to recruitment efforts for executive education programs and
other revenue-generating programs:
Collaborate with the team to develop marketing materials and strategies to
attract qualified candidates for executive education programs.
Identify target industries, organizations, and professionals that would
benefit from the institute's educational offerings and develop targeted
Maintain relationships with prospective students, provide information
about program offerings, and guide them through the application process.
3. Develop a long-term sustainability strategy for TRAILS and affiliated
initiatives at GW:
Work with GW Research Offices and GW Development and Alumni Relations to
identify potential funding opportunities, including research grants,
philanthropic donations, and corporate sponsorships.
Work with the team to develop compelling proposals and pitches for
securing long-term financial support.
Continuously assess and refine the sustainability strategy based on
changing trends and opportunities in the academic, policy, and industry

4. Direct and organize convening activities aimed at fostering collaboration
among policy, industry, and academic stakeholders:
Conceptualize, plan, and execute high-profile events, such as conferences,
workshops, roundtable discussions, and advisory boards to facilitate
knowledge sharing and networking.
Identify and invite influential speakers and experts to participate in
institute events, ensuring diverse perspectives and expertise.
Manage event logistics, including venue selection, budgeting, scheduling,
and coordination with external vendors and partners.
5. Collaborate with institute staff and faculty leaders on the strategic
direction of the institute:
Maintain regular communication with the PI, co-PIs, and management team to
align institute activities with broader goals and objectives.
Collaborate on strategic planning, budgeting, and reporting to ensure the
smooth functioning of the institute.
Support the PI and co-PIs in preparing progress reports, presentations,
and other documentation required by funding agencies and stakeholders.
Performs other work-related duties as assigned. The omission of specific
duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are
logically related to the position.
Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline plus 7 years of
relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date
of the position.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum
Proven experience in policy and industry outreach, preferably within an
academic or research setting.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to
build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
Strong organizational and project management abilities, with a keen eye
Familiarity with the policy and industry landscape, and a demonstrated
understanding of their interplay with academia.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced
Strong networking skills and the ability to engage with high-profile
individuals and organizations.
Proficiency in leveraging various communication channels and technologies
for outreach purposes.
Experience in fundraising, grant writing, or securing sponsorships would
be a plus.
Knowledge of executive education programs and the ability to effectively
market them to prospective students.
Familiarity with academic research environments and the ability to
identify research grant opportunities for faculty.
