Assistant Professor, Tenure Track, 9-month Position.

The East Tennessee State University Department of Music seeks a dynamic music educator and choral conductor to be the Director of Music Education and Associate Director of Choral Activities beginning in August 2022. Candidates for this position should have a minimum of four years of public school choral experience and have a track record of research in music education and accomplished choral conducting. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a commitment to working with diverse student populations, and they must be able to contribute to a collaborative, accepting, and welcoming space for all students and colleagues.

Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the Department of Music and the College of Education
  • Coordinate the music education courses in the Department of Music with other faculty
  • Help students meet all requirements for teacher licensure in the state of Tennessee
  • Work with music education students to prepare for and successfully pass the edTPA
  • Conduct at least one choral ensemble and collaborate closely with the Director of Choral Activities, including planning for the annual choral concert series
  • Teach undergraduate courses including introduction to music education, music education seminar, conducting, choral literature, and choral methods
  • Contribute to the development of the new Master of Music degree program
  • Build positive relationships with music educators in the community and region at large
  • Actively recruit students to grow the choral ensembles
  • Contribute to the discipline through research, creative activity, and professional engagements at the regional, state, national, and international levels

The choral program has over a quarter of a million dollars in scholarship funding to distribute annually to singers, and the choirs include hundreds of students from all majors on campus.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required Qualifications

    Qualifications for this position include:

  • Ph.D in Music Education (or equivalent). D.M.A. will be considered, but must demonstrate significant understanding and background in music education research.
  • Four years minimum of secondary school choral teaching
  • Scholarly research in the area of music education with publications
  • Evidence of successful choral conducting at the secondary and collegiate levels
  • Demonstrated success in recruiting/building a choral program and vision for expanding a university choral program
  • An understanding of curriculum building and undergraduate requirements for teaching licensure
  • A strong desire to build diverse, inclusive, and welcoming learning environments for students
  • The ability to work with other faculty in a collegial and professional manner
  • Interest in building relationships with community arts organizations, professional musicians, and other choral ensembles in the region/state.
