General Information

The Director of Health Promotion serves as a campus leader who develops, oversees, and administers and evaluates educational, comprehensive, and inclusive health and wellness program initiatives. This position performs high-level professional, leadership, management and administrative duties in the planning, coordination and directing of initiatives that enhance campus- wide engagement in prevention and wellness efforts. The position reports to the Assistant Vice President for Health and Well-being while actively collaborating with other campus and community support services to deliver relevant population-based programs and education.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership for the health promotion department. Directly supervise Health Promotion staff ensuring that performance evaluations align with divisional and departmental mission, vision and values. Oversee peer education programs.
  • Provide strategic leadership to guide campus-wide initiatives of a Health Promoting Campus. Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive holistic health promotion initiatives. Serves as the campus leader in creating a comprehensive culture of wellbeing for the campus community.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with key leaders in other university departments and external agencies in the community. Work across divisional lines to create a culture of well-being where our students thrive.
  • Manage financial resources assuring that fiscal operations are consistent with good practice and university/state policy.
  • Collaborate with Student Affairs Assessment Council to develop and implement ongoing assessment efforts.
  • Contribute to Student Affairs equity and inclusion value by designing intentional and inclusive practices, policies and programs.
  • Qualifications

    Required Experience:

  • Masters' Degree or higher in Health Promotion, Health Education, Public Health, Community Health Education, School Health, Higher Education, Health Communication, or related field.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in a relevant setting which includes at least three years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience serving diverse populations, with a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Extensive knowledge of current and emerging college health issues, environmental management/prevention strategies, health behavior change theories and ecological framework, and evidence‐based practice.
  • Ability to stay current on developments in the field of public health, health promotion, peer health education, and college health.
  • High level of organizational skills and proven record of delivering quality results in a timely manner.
  • Ability to strategically and creatively manage a wide range of projects, and to work quickly and effectively on deadline projects.
  • Proven ability to effectively collaborate with other departments to develop shared outcomes for health and well-being.
  • Ability to work successfully with a diverse community and provide inclusive services.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with regulation and legal requirements.
  • Preferred Experience:

  • Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES), Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Certified in Public Health (CPH), or eligible and intent to become certified.

    The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

    The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on- campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
