Position Summary Information

General Description/Position Purpose

Shippensburg University is currently searching for a Director of Facilities Management and Planning.

Serves as Director responsible for all functions related to the physical setting of a university campus of over 200 acres of grounds, 2.5 million square feet of usable academic, residential and office space, and all campus utility systems including a central chilled water plant and distribution system and campus-wide energy management system. To accomplish the necessary functions, the Director will manage an operational budget of over $12 million and coordinate the efforts of a staff of 100 professionals, tradespeople, custodians, and administrative personnel.

This position requires individual commitment to provide facilities support to the mission and myriad expectations of a university community. This position must deal with a diverse and complex customer and labor base and manage multiple priorities with wide ranging detail and impact which are key to success as well as the ability to express and communicate effectively. Also, the ability to focus a diverse and complex work force to provide top quality customer service in a continuously improving environment is needed.

Shippensburg University, established in 1871, is a comprehensive public university offering baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degree programs. Enrolling more than 6,000 students, the residential campus is located in scenic south central Pennsylvania. The campus is in close proximity to Harrisburg, PA and within a few hours drive of Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, DC. The historic borough of Shippensburg is in a small town setting in the growing region of south central Pennsylvania, at the conjunction of two major highways, Interstate 81 and the PA Turnpike. Located in the picturesque Cumberland Valley, Shippensburg is 45 minutes from Gettysburg and the state capital of Harrisburg, one hour from Hershey, PA, and 2 hours from Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C.

Minimum Qualifications

The qualified candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, construction management or other facilities related field. Successful performance in an on-campus interview and presentation is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An advanced degree in engineering, architecture, business or related field is preferred.
  • Current registration as a Professional Engineer or Registered Architect is desired.
  • Seven years of experience managing a highly complex facilities operation is required, in higher education is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience effectively managing a unionized workforce is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in construction project management and contract administration, building system design, building commissioning, energy management, facilities environmental issues, operations and maintenance of buildings, and other related subjects is preferred.
