As one of the top veterinary schools in the country, the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine is committed to being a leader in professional education, clinical service and research. The college's mission is to advance the veterinary profession and animal and human health through ongoing discovery and medical innovation; provide animals and their owners with extraordinary, compassionate medical care; and prepare the next generation of veterinarians and biomedical research scientists. The college is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education.

The college anchors the 250-acre Centennial Biomedical Campus, an extension of NC State's Centennial Campus. Instruction is provided through three academic departments: Clinical Sciences, Molecular Biomedical Sciences, and Population Health and Pathobiology. There are approximately 400 students enrolled in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine professional program and over 90 students enrolled in the multidisciplinary Comparative Biomedical Sciences graduate program. The college and teaching hospital are supported by more than 150 faculty and 450 staff members, and over 100 house officers (interns and residents). A unique feature of the campus is the 80-acre Teaching Animal Unit, a dynamic teaching lab for students to learn husbandry, production management and livestock production procedures.

Diversity and inclusion are critical to the success of the college, which promotes a values-driven culture of mutual respect that supports all of its community members, prioritizes relationships and collaborations, and promotes innovation and the pursuit of one's passions. DVM students develop key competencies necessary for success in private practice, industry, government and academia. The curriculum includes instruction and practice in teamwork, client interactions, and public communication as well as the development of interpersonal and organizational skills. The NC State Veterinary Hospital sees an average of 35,000 cases annually. Clinical faculty include internationally recognized certified specialists in over 30 disciplines, supported by highly trained veterinary technicians and staff. Small animal services are available across 17 specialty departments and equine services are available across six departments. The Veterinary Hospital provides state-of-the-art patient care for companion animals, equine and farm animals spread across three main facilities: The Randall B. Terry, Jr. Companion Animal Veterinary Medical Center, the Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center and the Veterinary Health and Wellness Center.

Essential Job Duties

The Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity will :

  • Work directly with faculty, staff and trainees to lead, educate, model and engage around the development and support of a diverse, inclusive and equitable community.
  • Work routinely with NC State campus administrative DEI personnel in the development and implementation of institution-wide programs in the CVM.
  • Serve as a member of university committees engaged in DEI work in cooperation with the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity.
  • Evaluate and guide recruitment and admissions strategies for the CVM that promote the enrollment of a diverse veterinary and graduate student class.
  • Research, develop, recommend, and execute creative strategies to foster the CVM's diversity goals.
  • Establish the infrastructure and processes to implement CVM's DEI strategies and goals.
  • Collaborate with CVM HR and college departments/units to ensure evidence- based measures are used to develop diverse employee (faculty, staff, post-docs, and house officers) candidate pools.
  • Work with the CVM leadership teams to guide support of a diverse student body, faculty and staff through programming, policy and recommendations.
  • Work with CVM leadership to identify strategy and training programs for faculty, staff, and students to help the CVM to grow as an inclusive community.
  • Serve as a member of Dean's Full Cabinet.
  • Assist with incorporating DEI into curriculum and program offerings when applicable; assist with advising for veterinary and graduate students.
  • Work with the Associate Dean and Director of Academic Affairs on learning outcomes for DEI as part of the formal DVM curriculum.

    Minimum Education and Experience

  • This position requires post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and function independently with limited supervision and guidance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and public from multiple disciplines and functions across the college and within the community.
  • High regard for confidentiality.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher qualification in a relevant discipline, including but not limited to social work, counseling, education, history, sociology, law, medicine, or veterinary medicine
  • Experience working with graduate student populations, including MS, PhD, Medicine, Law, Veterinary Medicine, or other.
  • Experience guiding DEI policy at an organizational level
  • Experience supporting DEI policy and programming in higher education and/or complex organizations, inclusive of advising, mentoring, teaching, activities, scholarship, leadership, or coordination.
