The mission of the School of Education at William & Mary is to transform students, schools, and communities through professional preparation, collaborative partnerships, and the translation of research into action.

Position Summary

Reporting to the School of Education Dean as a key member of the school's external relations team, the Director of Communications is responsible for creating and implementing integrated communication strategies that enhance the school's brand identity, raise private funds, and advance the school's mission. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Serving as the point person for internal and external media requests and representing the school on councils, committees, and at engagement activities/special events.
  • Write and edit news stories, faculty/student spotlights, newsletters, social media content, etc.
  • Manage the School of Education's website content and overall digital strategy.
  • Support donor stewardship efforts through customized reports and work with University Marketing on special projects.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, English, Marketing, or a related field OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Progressively responsible professional experience directly related to the position in communications, external relations, development, public relations, or similar.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment, or a commitment to do so as a staff member.
  • Knowledge of social networking, social media tools, and current communication trends.
  • Working knowledge of AP style, proofreader's marks, and editing conventions, with the demonstrated command of correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in using a variety of software applications such as MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook), InDesign, Canva, Photoshop, survey tools, or similar.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field e.g., higher education, communications, public relations, or equivalent experience to that of an advanced degree.
  • Experience in developing/implementing a comprehensive communications strategy that encompasses a variety of marketing channels such as social media platforms, written correspondence, graphic storytelling, audio and visual messaging, and web presence.
  • Prior communications experience in higher education.
  • Experience in fundraising and donor stewardship.
  • Familiarity with content management systems (e.g., Cascade).
  • Professional experience with photography and/or videography.
  • Experience with project management.
  • Experience with storytelling, design, and other creative visual, print, online communications, and social media.
  • Experience creating an effective web presence.
