Job Summary

The Director of Accounting reports to the Controller. The Director of Accounting is responsible for the day to day activities of the accounting department. Works under minimal supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. Works on special projects as needed. Prepares ad hoc reports as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited four-year college or university is required. Five years of experience on jobs leading to this is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting; and of the federal, state, and local laws, statutes, and regulations relating to the field. Solve problems and be multi-tasked. Supervise the work of others. High degree of communication skills, written and spoken. Develop and interpret policies and procedures. Deal with students, faculty, and staff in professional manner. Must be detail oriented. Must demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of students from diverse backgrounds. Plan, schedule, and manage projects and assignments. Establish effective working relationships with others. Skills in Microsoft Office programs such as Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint. Experience in Banner.

Travel – Minimal travel is required and travel to conferences. Working Conditions - Normal office environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in higher education is preferred. CPA is preferred.

SALARY $75,000 - $85,000; Plus Excellent Benefits and Retirement Work Hours 40 hours a week.

Perform daily accounting tasks including approving EPAFs, activating positions in Banner, and answering campus customers with budget requests.

Review other monthly tasks including travel card clearing, procurement clearing, supply center clearing, Market Basket Clearing, and fuel reimbursement Physical Plant.

Process quarterly binding encumbrances in USAS.

Annually perform escheat procedures.

Annually perform and assist in IPEDS, RFOE, Sources and Uses, Board of Regents requests, TWC, and other reports as needed.

Serve on committees including TSUS Business Officers, TASSCUBO Budget, and TASSCUBO Accounting.

Provide supervision to other accountants and non-accountants in the department including but not limited to the areas of capital assets, banking, accounts receivable, accounts payable and grants.
