Job Summary The University of Southern Mississippi's School of Child and Family Studies (CFS) is advertising for a Director for the Center for Child Development located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi beginning July, 2021. The Center is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and serves as the primary laboratory site for CFS students. The successful candidate will manage the day-to-day financial and programming operations of the Center for Child Development, and maintain a high quality educational environment for children, staff, and families.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities The School values accountability, high ethical standards, professionalism, and personal integrity among employees.   • Collaborate with the Associate Director of the School of Child and Family Sciences to establish and implement policies and best practices for the center and for the care and education of children 0-5.
  • Hire, retain, and supervise high quality teachers and staff.
  • Develop financial plan to sustain the center and support center improvements.
  • Collaborate with the School of Child and Family Science faculty advisor on program curriculum; observation, assessment, and documentation; and lab/practicum student expectations and performance.
  • Meet all accreditation, grant, and licensure standards and requirements for NAEYC, Mississippi Department of Health, USDA Child and Adult Food Program, and US Department of Education Child Care Access Means Parents in School.

  • Inform and advocate for the needs of the Center for Child Development with the Director of the School of Child and Family Sciences.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development, including, but not limited to, MSDH-approved administration courses; coordinate professional staff development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Master's degree from an accredited college or university in child development, family studies, human development, early childhood education or closely related field and three years experience in an early childhood setting serving typical and atypical children ages 0-5; -OR - Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in child development, family studies, human development, early childhood education or closely related field and two years experience as an administrator in an early childhood setting serving typical and atypical children ages 0-5; and documented plan to complete master's degree within three years.

    Meets NAEYC standards for program administrators, including a minimum of 9 credit hours of college-level course work in administration, leadership, and management, or a documented plan to meet said qualifications within 3 year.

    Acceptable immunization record and background check as required by the university and for childcare licensure in the state of Mississippi.

  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and facilitate positive relationships with parents, children, university students, faculty, staff, university stakeholders, and community stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, and comply with school, college, and university policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of budgetary and management principles and practices.
  • Ability to establish goals and objectives.
  • Adept in Microsoft Office
  • Skills, or ability to gain skills, in CANVAS, Zoom, and Teams
  • Ability to work variable hours. The Center is open from 7:30 to 5:30 Monday through Friday, and the director or director designee must be present when the center opens and closes. After hours programming may also influence designated office hours.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. from an accredited college or university in child development, family studies, human development, early childhood education, or closely related field.
  • Five years related experience in an early childhood setting serving typical and atypical children ages 0-5;
  • Experience in teaching college-level courses in face-to-face and in online delivery formats.
  • Experience in grant submission and grant management.
  • Documented experience in sound financial operations.
  • MSDH-approved administration courses.
  • Current Tummy Safe certification.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities Lead Teachers (9) Assistant Teachers (3) Kitchen Attendant (1) Graduate Assistants (1-2) Student Workers (varies)
