Internal Duke Title: Managing Editor, Journals and Publications

Summary

The Digital Content Editor will create and lead a digital content strategy for DukeMag.duke.edu, the online presence of the university's flagship publication. The magazine upholds the highest journalistic standards in showcasing the intellectual dynamism of a community of engaged, interesting and accomplished faculty members, students, and alumni. This position reports to the Executive Editor of DukeMag and works as a part of a small editorial team of writers and freelancers.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Create, produce and manage high-quality content for the DukeMag website
  • Build relationship with the editorial team and establish collaboration with other team members across AED including digital
  • Supervise layout of images, graphics, videos and other artwork on the site to keep it updated
  • Regularly check and track content
  • Occasionally create content, as needed, including photo galleries, stories, etc...
  • Proofread and edit material for the site and DukeMag's print editions; collaborate on story ideas that align web and print.
  • Work as a part of the editorial team to establish a digital content strategy that elevates magazine offerings and provides value-added additional content online.
  • Collaborate with social media manager for better promotion/web presence
  • Adhere to copyright and privacy standards and company policies
  • Determine and track important KPIs
  • Work with digital team to track and analyze website's traffic
  • Produce and present reports about web growth/ideation
  • Keep abreast of new trends in web technology/use in a university setting
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous working experience as a fulltime journalist and digital editor for at least 5 years
  • Excellent proofreading, writing, editing and copywriting skills including strong understanding of AP style
  • Knowledge of software such as InDesign, Photoshop, etc.
  • Knowledge of best SEO practices
  • Knowledge of marketing and SEO tools
  • Knowledge of content management systems
  • Attention to detail — especially editorial content standards
  • Creative thinker with collaboration and problem-solving skills
  • Team player — desire to support editorial and marketing functions of the unit
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Great interpersonal, presentation and communication skills
  • Four- year degree in journalism, communications or a related field

    Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

    Experience

    Work requires 4 years of editorial experience in a publishing related setting to acquire skills necessary to manage and coordinate a variety of tasks such as copy editing, researching manuscripts for accuracy, clarity, and content.
