Position Dialogue and Democracy Mentor (2023 Summer Employment)

Dialogue and Democracy is a week-long, residential, summer institute for high school students, which helps participants build skills for dialogue across difference and for participation in their local communities. The program mentors are Saint Mary's students who will act as leaders during the program, facilitating small group discussions, helping organize activities, and building community among participants. During Senior Week 2023 (dates TBD), they will participate in training. During July, mentors will need to be on campus helping facilitate the institute from appx. July 13-21st. Mentors must be available during Senior Week in the spring for appx. 25 hours of training. 60 hours during the week of the program, July 10-15; up to 15 hours of follow up in the following fall semester. Includes room and board during training and institute.

In the fall of 2023, mentors will meet for up to 15 hours to plan/facilitate follow up engagement activities for summer participants.

Job Duties

Successful applicants will be Saint Mary's students (first year through juniors) who can demonstrate leadership abilities, a commitment to engaged dialogue across difference, and the ability to listen well. Mentors should be reliable, able to maintain confidentiality, and open to welcoming and supporting participants from a range of backgrounds, viewpoints, and experiences. Preference given to applicants who have previously taken PHIL 291: Dialogue and Civil Discourse, but anyone meeting the above requirements may apply.

Minimum Qualifications

Mature college student and living on campus is a requirement for this position.
