  • The grant is awarded for the assembly, characterization and use of optical equipment for trapping nanometric objects (single atoms, molecules or dielectrics) by means of an optical potential ('optical tweezer') in ultra- high vacuum. The levitating system is positioned inside a high Finesse optical cavity. The coupling between the motion of the center of mass and the optical modes of the cavity occurs by coherent interaction.

    The study includes: a) the cooling of the motion of the levitating system by interaction with the cavity field, b) the strong and coherent coupling between the electromagnetic field and the motional degrees of freedom, c) the quantum properties of the system, in particular quantum correlations (entanglement) between mechanical and optical degrees of freedom, d) the application of these systems for the realization of new quantum simulators with control over the individual trapped objects.
