About This Role:
Housing and Residence Life—Cardinal Village (HRL) is committed to
providing a safe, secure, and inclusive community that is supportive to the
academic mission of the university and to preparing students to live lives of
leadership, intellectual engagement, citizenship, and civility.
Desk Assistants (DAs) are the initial contact and represent Housing &
Residence Life to incoming and current students at Lamar University. While on
the phone or in person, Desk Assistants are required to be courteous and make
positive first impressions. They work closely with Cardinal Village residents,
staff, prospective students, and parents. Desk Assistants are responsible for
answering phones and emails, taking messages, and making appointments. They
interact with students who come in for appointments, answer basic questions,
assist students with paperwork, and handle correspondence from various
sources. Desk Assistants also pick up and deliver HRL documents to and from
their respective residence halls
COMPENSATION :
$8.50 per hour (base pay)
$10.00 per hour (If granted work study)
Limited 19.5 hours per week
Uniform/Work Attire provided (T-shirts)

What You'll Do – Position Duties
As a member of our team, you will have an impact on our students through
accomplishment of the following responsibilities:
COMMUNICATION:Desk Assistants must demonstrate effective professional
communication skills.
Serve as a resource, referral, and communication agent; Serve as a liaison
between residents and university administrators.
Attend and participate in all Fall and Spring training sessions as
published in the employment dates.
Regularly inspect the front desk and complete the appropriate reports;
Report maintenance work needed in public areas.
Assist with follow-up of damaged residence hall property.
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT: Desk Assistants must demonstrate a working knowledge
of both Cardinal Village & LU resources.
Educate residents about community standards by promoting and maintaining
an inclusive environment.
Remain visible and available to Cardinal Village residents.
Complete administrative work and all other duties assigned by Professional
Staff. (i.e., responding to emails, phone calls, facility reservations,
work orders, Unit Inspections, work orders, student relations, etc.)
Distribute paperwork, fliers, and brochures, according to the Housing
Operations Manuel.
CUSTOMER SERVICE: Desk Assistants must demonstrate effective customer
service my making the student, parent, or staff member feel heard & valued.
Provide quality customer service to students, staff, and other
stakeholders
Promote university support initiatives for academic success, retention,
and progress, by engaging in meaningful conversations with residents.
Develop and maintain relationships with residents, addressing individual
student concerns with good customer service and responsiveness.
POLICY ENFORCEMENT: Desk Assistants will record, and report information
promptly as outlined in the Housing Operations Manual and building-specific
forms/processes.
Abide by university policies; confront, enforce, and report violations of
policies and inappropriate behavior in the assigned area.
Notify campus administrators of safety and security concerns (Pro Staff
on Call, LUPD, CSO, Hall Security).
Respond to crises and emergencies as directed in established protocols or
as directed by supervisor or other university personnel.
ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS:
DA's will comply with all policies, procedures, and conditions of the LU
Student Code of Conduct, Housing Contract & Handbook, DA Addendum & Work
Agreement, and written expectations provided by Professional Staff.
All Student Housing & Residential Life student staff may be required to be
present and provide assistance during crisis or emergencies such as
inclement weather—related emergencies (hurricanes, floods, snow, etc.),
infectious disease outbreak, building/system failures, or other
emergencies as long as the university or residence halls remain open and
occupied.
The DA position is a full academic year commitment with a maximum average
of 20 hours per week (Hall Opening & Closing will require a flexed
schedule).
Assists with departmental sponsored events such as Student Staff
Selection, Cardinal View, Family Weekend, Finals Week, and Week of
Welcome.
Minimum Qualifications
What You'll Need to Succeed – Minimum Qualifications
To be successful in this role and a great addition to our team we need you
to come with the following:
Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA
Must be a registered student at Lamar University; Must be an undergraduate
student enrolled full-time during employment
Have no other on-campus employment commitments.
Be in good academic and student conduct standing with the university
Key Competencies:
Must be able to fulfill one full semester of employment.
Must be able to attend mandatory trainings and orientations at the
beginning of each semester
Must be of good character and possess a strong work ethic.
Communicate effectively in person with students, staff, and visitors.
Provide and receive oral/verbal direction and support during emergency
situations.
Must be able to answer a multiline telephone system, take detailed and
concise messages/transfer calls to the appropriate party in a timely
fashion.
Must be able to assist with tour groups on Cardinal View Days.
Physical Requirements
Ascend and descend multiple flights of stairs to complete on-duty rounds
and security checks; physically able to move quickly through congested
crowd situations.
Troubleshoot and report facilities maintenance problems.
Prepare written documents and complete forms.
Navigate complex filing systems in order to file confidential information.
Lift and carry items up to 20 pounds for a distance up to 200 feet.
