Title

Designing and evaluating a digital health anxiety intervention for young children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder

Description

Autism spectrum disorder is diagnosed in 1-2% of children, with mental health conditions frequently co-occurring. The majority will experience debilitating anxiety at some point. Research into evaluating effective anxiety treatments has been repeatedly ranked as amongst the highest priority for research by the autistic community. Our team has been evaluating anew intervention designed to target a mechanism contributing to anxiety, referred to as intolerance of uncertainty, for parents/caregivers of young children diagnosed with autism experiencing anxiety or worry about uncertainty. However, significant barriers to accessing affordable, accessible, and efficacious mental healthcare remains a challenge to implementing this into clinical practice. This project will co- develop and evaluate a digital therapeutic that aims to provide an evidence- based digital solution, with this PhD contributing to the design, delivery, and evaluation of outcomes, as well as add their own unique research questions within the overall project.

The project is embedded within CliniKids, the Telethon Kids Institute's first clinical service, providing research integrated clinical services for families and children on the autism spectrum. The PhD will also provide opportunities to apply for generous top-up funding, internal awards, and access professional development training through the Telethon Kids Institute.
