Deputy Director of Legal Services, Head of Commercial, Corporate, and IP

For over 800 years the University of Cambridge has been nurturing and developing incredible talent, creating legends and visionaries. Our people have changed the course of history, many times. When it comes to teaching, learning and research, we are world-leading, ground-breaking and have a reputation for excellence.

We contribute to society in a big way. Our mission is to be a force for good in the world and our lawyers are key in delivering this. They support our work and we couldn't do what we do without them; they are talented, pragmatic and empowering, and we work collaboratively with them at all levels.

So, why do we need you?

We have an exciting vacancy at a very senior level in our Legal Services Division. We are looking for an outstanding legal professional with a special combination of skills.

You are an experienced adviser who thrives on handling complex commercial, corporate and IP matters and leading other lawyers doing likewise. At the same time, you are a strategic thinker who will relish the opportunity to share responsibility for the management and direction of an in-house legal team practising an extraordinarily wide range of law and operating in a complex organisation.

You will be inspired by our history, but be even more excited about our future. This is a growing team which strives to be an indispensable partner for its University colleagues. You will share the team's ethos of collaborative working and its drive to deliver an ever more efficient and progressive service.

We are looking for someone who:

  • has outstanding legal expertise in commercial, corporate, and IP law and a passion to learn more and train others.
  • understands the need for nuance where appropriate and is able to think outside the box to deliver innovative and pragmatic solutions.
  • can lead and inspire other lawyers to achieve high performance and enjoys supporting their personal growth.
  • has the strategic acumen to contribute impactfully to the development of a 'best in class' in-house legal function.
  • can work effectively under pressure showing good judgment and initiative.
  • We will expect you to:

  • oversee all aspects of the team's corporate, commercial, and IP practice.
  • as part of the senior management of the team, play a pivotal role in fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical innovation across the Division.
  • lead or participate in cross-functional University teams to take high- value large-scale corporate transactions and international collaborations successfully to completion.
  • deputise for the Director as required and assume overall responsibility for the team when the Director is away.
  • Encouraging excellence and fostering growth is in our DNA. This is an opportunity for personal development and career progression. Join us and help shape the future of our in-house legal function and in turn the way our University makes a difference to the world.

We would prefer to make a full time appointment but are open to considering part-time or compressed working arrangements. Our approach to flexible working values both face-to-face engagement and personal freedom, and reflects contemporary practices. You and your manager will work together to tailor an arrangement that best suits your preferences and our business needs.
