The Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) seeks a visionary academic leader to serve asthe Deputy Director of the Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health (ICMH). The successful candidate will have a strong background in musculoskeletal basic and translational research. This individual will work with the Executive Director to build collaborations and teams and generate short and long-term strategic plans for musculoskeletal research. Experience should include evidence of building diverse collaborations and teams, innovative problem-solving, strategic vision-setting and transformational leadership in academic medicine. Candidates should possess a PhD, MD or MD/PhD, and have a strong, active research program.

The Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD) Research Group at IUSM is among the very top groups in the country and world. The group has steadily grown over the past 20 years and currently includes over 40 investigators. The ICMH has capitalized on the musculoskeletal (MSK) research strengths in basic, clinical, and translational MSK research by providing scientific, administrative, fiscal, space, and technological resources to bring the individually successful MSK investigators together in synchronized pursuit of solutions to musculoskeletal disease. The ICMH includes over 100 members, distributed across the Schools of Medicine, Engineering & Technology, Science, Dentistry, and Human and Health Sciences and others. The investigators have over $60 million in extramural funding, a T32, and state of the art core- facilities. The ICMH serves as a springboard from which to launch innovative, multidisciplinary, cross-collaborative approaches to musculoskeletal disease. It is a hub for attracting high-impact recruits to complement the existing strengths of the current investigative team, and it serve as a nucleus for collaborative/institutional funding opportunities. Ultimately, the center is envisioned to achieve a “destination” status for MSD patients seeking innovative therapies and cutting-edge treatment.

Indiana is ranked among the top five states for both the total number of life science jobs (55,000 and growing) and the number of life science companies (2,000 and growing). Bioscience products comprise one-third of all Indiana exports and contribute more than $50 billion in annual value to Indiana's economy. Northern Indiana has the largest and most concentrated orthopedic medical device cluster in the world. This area is second only to California in medical devices and captures one-third ($38 billion) of the global orthopaedic market. Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly & Company boasts the world's most robust and successful osteoporosis drug program. Cook Biotech, located in West Lafayette, is a world leader in connective tissue engineering and has a thriving research program and product lines in ligament, tendon, and bone repair/regeneration. Roche Diagnostics, located in Indianapolis, has an active program in bone turnover biomarker discovery and validation, and is one of the leading partners in the National Bone Health Alliance's (NBHA) bone biomarker standardization program. The Indiana musculoskeletal science research group has established partnerships/collaborations with each of these entities, as well as many others. These efforts are led by IUSM in collaboration with IU/IUPUI Schools of Dentistry, Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Nursing, Science, and other programs relevant to musculoskeletal research including those at Purdue University with intent to seek funding from industry, federal agencies (e.g., AHRQ, DOD, NIH, NSF), and other institutes (e.g., PCORI). The successful candidate should have demonstrated experience in fostering collaboration and establishing efforts with partners to identify and address unmet patient needs. In this role, there are great and unique opportunities to form important collaborations between healthcare providers/ practitioners, researchers and the medical device industry to improve and advance patient care.

Basic Qualifications

Doctorate or Terminal degree is required, with eligibility for appointment at the associate or full professor rank to be determined based on academic credentials. Successful applicants must have a PhD and/or MD degree.
