Deputy Area Manager (Animal Technician)

Further your career and take this opportunity to advance in the dynamic industry of animal technology.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and experienced Animal Technician to join our dynamic, hardworking, and committed team in the Biological Resources Unit (BRU) in a busy Institute situated on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

This role supports the Area Manager/NACWO in delivering sound welfare and technical advice to the users and staff of the BRU. The post holder will lead by example and foster and promote a culture of care, the BRU core values and the 3Rs within the BRU and the wider Institute. They will deputise in the absence of the NACWO in all duties required by the role. They will provide training and assessments in licensed and technical techniques and tasks within the BRU. The successful candidate will be responsible for the care and welfare of small rodent cancer models housed within the facility and will have formal line management duties. The role will be based in either the Experimental part of the facility or the Barrier area depending on the expertise of the applicant. In both areas the role holder will build a working relationship with the colony owners and attend experimental lab meetings as well as represent the BRU at Users, departmental and other relevant meetings.

The successful candidate will be able to work both independently and as part of a dedicated team and will ideally hold or be working towards the Institute of Animal Technology IAT level 3 diploma or equivalent experience and/or a relevant HNC together with appropriate animal technology and laboratory experience (A Home Office Personal Licence Modules A, B and C, further training will be given for modules 20, 21 and 22).

The unit operates a rota system to provide cover at weekends and Bank Holidays. Candidates will therefore be required to work outside of normal working hours.

Where applicants do not meet all the essential criteria for the role, we may consider making an offer at Grade 5 (£27,929-£32,348), and provide the successful candidate with a development plan for working towards appointment to the Grade 6 position within a defined timeframe.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records check) check, a health assessment and a security check.
