Job description

Department of Sociology

As one of the founding departments of the University, the Department of Sociology is renowned for its excellence in education and excellence in research, with 37 full-time and 7 part-time academic staff and approximately 783 students (and growing).

It is ranked in the top 50 of the QS World Rankings and has been in the top ten for the quality of its research in all of the research assessment exercises since 1986.

In addition to this post, the Department is supported by a team of 7 administrators and support staff, led by the Department Manager and the Deputy Department Manager.

The Department of Sociology is keen to develop the diversity of its staff. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who, through their service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the Professional Services team.

Duties of the Role

The Department Manager provides leadership for the Professional Services Team in the Department so that it is able to make a full contribution to delivering the excellence in education and research that is the University's purpose.

The role has a focus on staff management and strategic planning, and requires gaining knowledge and expertise of University regulations, policies and practices.

The main duties include leading the Professional Services Team and providing support to the Head of Department mainly in relation to strategic planning, human resource management and financial planning. Duties also include compliance and quality assurance and responsibility for reviewing and monitoring administrative procedures and systems within the Department. The role also involves acting as an interface with other sections of the University and representing departmental interests at University Committees and Working Groups.

Qualifications and Skills required

The role is varied and wide ranging. The successful candidate will possess a good first degree or equivalent qualification / professional experience. In addition, you will have proven, extensive and high level administrative experience coupled with experience of staff management.

You will be expected to demonstrate strong leadership, financial management, organisational and administrative skills and have excellent IT skills.

Flexibility, excellent interpersonal and communication skills combined with the ability to deal effectively with competing priorities and deadlines are also essential for this post.
