The mission of the Department of Applied Ecology at NC State University is to advance fundamental and novel discoveries in ecology, environmental, and life sciences, to share those discoveries with our students and the general public and apply them to develop solutions to society's greatest environmental problems. We accomplish this through research, teaching, and extension and engagement. The department is also home to the federal NC Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit (USGS), a service center for Applied Aquatic Ecology, the Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center (USGS), and NC Agromedicine Institute.

Research

We conduct world-class applied and fundamental research that draws upon the broader fields of biology, ecology, life sciences, genetics, toxicology, interdisciplinary risk sciences, conservation, and living resource management and employs novel approaches to confront local, regional, and global environmental problems and challenges. Our research spans microbial to landscape scales, aquatic and terrestrial habitats, and urban, agricultural, and natural environments.

Teaching

We provide advanced education to graduate students through interdepartmental graduate degree programs (MR, M.Sc. and Ph.D.) in Biology; Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology; and Environmental Assessment. The Department offers an undergraduate minor in Applied Ecology and is developing an undergraduate major in Applied Ecology.

Areas of emphasis in the department include:

  • Aquaculture

  • Extension and Engagement

We develop and disseminate research-based information in Aquaculture, Fisheries and Pond Management, Environmental Toxicology and Agromedicine, Risk Analysis, Water Quality Analysis, and Biodiversity Conservation to the general public through NC State Extension, collaborations with state and federal agencies, and direct outreach. Many of our research programs adopt a citizen science approach to leverage benefits in both research and outreach.
