The mission of the Department of Applied Ecology at NC State University is to advance fundamental and novel discoveries in ecology, environmental, and life sciences, to share those discoveries with our students and the general public and apply them to develop solutions to society's greatest environmental problems. We accomplish this through research, teaching, and extension and engagement. The department is also home to the federal NC Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit (USGS), a service center for Applied Aquatic Ecology, the Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center (USGS), and NC Agromedicine Institute.
Research
We conduct world-class applied and fundamental research that draws upon the broader fields of biology, ecology, life sciences, genetics, toxicology, interdisciplinary risk sciences, conservation, and living resource management and employs novel approaches to confront local, regional, and global environmental problems and challenges. Our research spans microbial to landscape scales, aquatic and terrestrial habitats, and urban, agricultural, and natural environments.
Teaching
We provide advanced education to graduate students through interdepartmental graduate degree programs (MR, M.Sc. and Ph.D.) in Biology; Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology; and Environmental Assessment. The Department offers an undergraduate minor in Applied Ecology and is developing an undergraduate major in Applied Ecology.

Extension and Engagement
We develop and disseminate research-based information in Aquaculture, Fisheries and Pond Management, Environmental Toxicology and Agromedicine, Risk Analysis, Water Quality Analysis, and Biodiversity Conservation to the general public through NC State Extension, collaborations with state and federal agencies, and direct outreach. Many of our research programs adopt a citizen science approach to leverage benefits in both research and outreach.
Essential Job Duties
The Department Head has overall responsibility for the leadership and administration of all teaching, research, and extension activities in the Department of Applied Ecology. The Head works closely with the Dean and Directors of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in the delivery of departmental programs in teaching, research, and extension. The Head also has a key role in the recruitment and development of faculty and staff, oversees planning and evaluation of the Department's academic, research, and extension programs, and is responsible for allocation and accountability of departmental budgetary matters. The Head works closely with others in the Department to assure timely dissemination of information to the Department's clientele.
The Head will foster an environment of inclusion and promote mutually beneficial working relationships. They will pursue fundraising as appropriate to support the department's programs and other developmental activities and will serve as the Department's lead representative in interactions with college and university administrators, associated centers and institutes, clientele groups, and the public. The Head is expected to promote collaborations and partnerships with other University departments as well as state, national, and international agencies and other organizations. N.C. Preferred Qualifications
Candidates that currently hold the rank of Professor with tenure and has a record of outstanding professional achievement in research, teaching, and/or extension in their areas of expertise related to ecology, biology, natural sciences, or related discipline to the field of applied ecology with a working knowledge of current issues and developments in the field are especially encouraged to apply. In addition, candidates with a strong record of administrative and extramural funding experience are also preferred.
