Primary Purpose of the Position

Faculty in the Department of Physical Therapy in the School of Health Sciences at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), seek a department chairperson with a demonstrated record as a champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion within the field of physical therapy and beyond.

The chairperson serves as the department's academic and operational leader, providing effective leadership in the areas of accreditation, faculty development, student recruitment and budget management. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Health Sciences, the chairperson works with a talented team of faculty and directors of programs to advance the mission of the university, School, and department as well as the profession through quality education. In this administrative role, the chairperson will work collaboratively with the faculty to engage in curriculum development, assess and evaluate degree program outcomes, and support research, service, and strategic planning. The preferred candidate is a senior faculty member who possesses strong leadership acumen, management skills, interpersonal communication, teaching excellence, and an established research record. This position is a full-time, 12-month appointment at the Associate or Full professor level. Academic rank and salary are commensurate with experience and track record.

Department Required Skills

  • An earned academic doctoral degree (e.g. Ph.D. Ed.D, DHS or equivalent) in Physical Therapy or a related discipline from a regionally accredited four-year institution of higher education.
  • A minimum of six years of full-time higher education experience with a minimum of three years of full-time experience as a core faculty member in a physical therapist education program
  • Academic administrative experience including evidence of preparing and administering departmental budgets and resources
  • Experience with CAPTE accreditation
  • Must be tenurable at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at Winston-Salem State University.
  • Active research in an area closely associated with Physical Therapy
  • A strong record of peer-reviewed publications/scholarship
  • Evidence of extramural funding.

  • A physical therapist (DPT and/or PT) who is licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of North Carolina.

  • A commitment to supporting research efforts in the department that are consistent with WSSU's Strategic Plan

    Administrative and Budgetary Responsibilities

  • Attends department chair meetings and report to the department as appropriate.
  • Maintains records for the department on faculty workloads, student majors, and enrollments.
  • Conducts and reports on the department's major goals and outcomes.
  • Prepares the department's annual final report.
  • Prepares reports on departmental activities for publications.
  • Facilitates the implementation of policy and curriculum revisions in the university's catalog and appropriate web sites that address departmental curriculum issues.
  • Recommend to the appropriate dean the schedule of courses for the academic year and the summer session.
  • Coordinate department recruitment of new faculty, recommends appointments to the dean, oversee the departmental orientation of new faculty.
  • Promote regular conversation among departmental colleagues concerning the quality of the department's teaching, research, and other contributions to the University.
  • Supervise the departmental budget, record keeping, and the requisition of supplies, equipment, materials, and other instructional needs.
  • Develop and follow procedures to assign faculty to classes, laboratories, studios, and other responsibilities.
  • Prepare long-range projections of department space and equipment needs.
  • Coordinate the allocation and utilization of space and equipment assigned to the department.
  • Manage requests for repairs, maintenance, and plant improvements.

    Curriculum and Academic Planning Responsibilities

  • Encourages the development and improvement of the departmental curriculum and ensures that the proper curriculum forms are submitted on schedule.
  • Stimulates discussions that review the nature and quality of departmental offerings and requirements at regular intervals.
  • Coordinates and supervises the departmental programs, reviews, accreditation and departmental evaluations, and other reviews.
  • Conducts external reviews of the department in accordance with accreditation or University requirements.
  • Seeks opportunities for the department to support college-wide programs when developing its course offerings and staffing plans.
  • Assigns faculty advisors for department majors.
  • Ensures the preparation of catalog information and class schedule options in accordance with deadlines.
  • Oversees departmental preparation of the course catalog, monitoring a coherent system of prerequisites, course rotations, etc.
  • Ensures that the department establishes clear goals and objectives consistent with those of the University and coordinates activity within the department to ensure its programs are designed to achieve these ends
  • Establishes a departmental assessment system to evaluate program goals and leverage those data to improve unit, program, and personnel performance outcomes.

    Personnel Supervision and Development Responsibilities

  • Evaluate faculty performance and develop procedures for assessing faculty accomplishments.
  • Encourage improvement of faculty performance by fostering good teaching, stimulating research, scholarly writing, and creative activity.
  • Promote faculty professional development and enrichment, and encourage faculty in their service to the University and the community.
  • Ensure that the workload within the department is equitably distributed among its' members and suited to their individual talents and accomplishments and to the needs of its approved programs.
  • Make recommendations relative to tenure, promotion, reappointment, salary adjustment and leaves of absence.
  • Facilitate and encourage grants and contracts from extramural sources.
  • Participate in a mentoring program for new faculty, typically serving on the mentoring committees of all newly hired faculty members in the department.
  • Maintain faculty morale by preventing and resolving conflicts, and by arranging for the effective and equitable distribution of faculty responsibilities.
  • Supervise clerical, non-teaching personnel, students, and graduate assistants assigned to the department including selection, scheduling, evaluation and discipline.

    Student-Related Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the academic advisement process and monitor the process to see that it is responsive to changing student goals and aspirations.
  • Encourage student clubs and organizations which foster achievement and professional development.
  • Develop procedures for resolving student complaints about faculty, courses and/or programs.
  • Inform students of special departmental registration procedures and enrollment criteria, etc., and administer those procedures as appropriate.
  • Ensure that students pursuing programs in the department have appropriate courses available to them to allow satisfactory progress towards degree completion.
  • Manage student grade appeals and complaints.
  • Make preliminary judgment concerning plagiarism cases and other incidences of suspected academic dishonesty.
  • Supervise the department advisement program, assign advisers for majors, provide faculty with advisement materials, and counsels students who seek advice beyond the advisor.
  • Approve waivers from department requirements and recommend to the dean waivers from appropriate faculty or University requirements.
  • Approve requests, consistent with University or faculty policies or directives, for independent studies, change of major, undergraduate enrollment in graduate courses, course withdrawals, and permission to take courses at other institutions; recommend to the dean course overloads; signs reports of incomplete work; and participates in academic progress decisions.
