Job Summary

Purdue University Northwest (PNW) invites applications for an exceptional academic leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Communication and Creative Arts with an expected start date of July 1, 2022. The chair will provide strategic leadership to a diverse department and will work with faculty, staff, and students to build upon the department's strengths in teaching, research, and service.

Applicants should have academic credentials commensurate with appointment to the rank of professor or associate professor, with tenure. Applicants also must have administrative experience the areas of budgets, promoting the professional development of faculty and staff, scheduling, academic program and curriculum development, and assessing academic programs. They should also have experience in personnel supervision, establishing interdepartmental and interdisciplinary collaborations, and facilitating the department's contributions and outcomes consistent with the university's strategic goals.

The chair will be an individual with a national reputation who will contribute to one or more of the department's core areas of research and teaching, have an active research agenda, and evidence of a strong record of teaching effectiveness, including mentoring graduate students. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an ability to work cooperatively with faculty and students; to provide leadership in realizing the strategic vision of the university, college, and department; to promote the humanities and social sciences in a STEM-rich university environment; to address various challenges of public higher education; and to cultivate civic engagement in the local community through partnerships and collaborations.

It is expected that the chair will be engaged in and supportive of scholarly or creative activities that attract external funding (e.g., fellowships, grants) and provide leadership to increase the faculty's external funding. The chair will develop external relationships that help to further the research, teaching, and service outcomes of faculty. The chair will also have service duties, including program-building, as well as commitment to extra- curricular activities.


Academic degree as defined by the academic unit and as appropriate for the position held. Demonstrated record of effectiveness as a teacher; a record of peer-reviewed publications which has contributed to the discipline or field of study and to the quality of the academic enterprise; a record of professional service appropriate to the discipline; promise of continued growth in teaching and research or artistic and creative activity.


  • Ph.D. in Communication, Mass Communication, Digital Communication
  • At least two years of higher education administrative experience described above
  • Credentials that merit appointment at the rank of full or associate professor with tenure
  • An active research program in a related area
  • Experience working with diverse populations and first-generation students
  • Experience acquiring or pursuing external funding

  • Experience in higher education budgeting
  • Professional experience in a related area
  • Successful guidance in tenure and promotion cases
  • Experience supporting successful donor and alumni relations

    The Department of Communication and Creative Arts is a multidisciplinary department serving about 230 undergraduate majors and 15 graduate students. The department hosts recording studios, broadcast studio, an art gallery, a theater, laboratory student newspaper, and an awarding-winning student- produced show The Roundtable Perspective , a weekly interview program that airs on the local PBS affiliate.
