This position is for a field research assistant within The Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The purpose of the position is conduct dental assessments (including plaque index, gingival index, and denture plaque index) as part of a research study being conducted in assisted living communities. The dental hygienist will conduct oral hygiene assessments for 48 NC assisted living communities, which will take place at the communities. Additionally, the hygienist will provide training to AL staff. The study is to train assisted living staff on the principles of Mouth Care Without a Battle. Mouth Care Without a Battle is an evidence-based approach to person-centered daily mouth care for persons with cognitive and physical impairment. The position requires the dental hygienist to train assisted living staff as well as provide ongoing coaching during the intervention period. In addition to conducting oral hygiene assessments, the dental hygienist will work independently within assisted living communities to conduct data collection: recruit and consent study participants and administer interviews and questionnaires to family members and staff. The field data collector will complete other tasks to support the research study as directed. Extensive travel required; travel averaging to from two to five hours from Chapel Hill will regularly occur. Some occasional overnight travel is required.

Education and Experience

Licensed to practice as a Dental Hygienist in the State of North Carolina.

Candidate is preferred to be a licensed practical nurse. An active license to practice is not required for this position.

Candidate must have:

- Ability to review data and information for completeness and accuracy within well-defined research parameters - Ability to adhere to study protocols and to research and IRB regulations - Strong communication skills – making telephone calls and interviewing study participants; speaking and meeting with clinical and administrative staff to facilitate data collection and to troubleshoot as needed; having regular check-ins with project manager; receiving feedback on data quality, and cleaning and revising data based on feedback - Experience working with older adults (especially those with dementia) - Experience working in assisted living communities - The ability to perform a minimum of 20 dental hygiene assessments during one day, under atypical examination conditions - Ability to travel to assisted living homes located up to five hours driving time from Chapel Hill. -Travel reimbursement will be provided - Knowledge of infection control practices related to providing oral hygiene assessments and daily mouth care - Required Licenses/Certifications

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience enrolling and consenting study participants - Knowledge of and demonstrated skills in data collection, entry, and monitoring - Basic understanding of medical terminology - Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access), and web-based data collection tools
