An excellent opportunity to support the teaching team on the BSc and MSc Psychology programmes as Demonstrator in Psychological Science.

You will assist in the delivery of predetermined programmes of teaching to Birkbeck Psychological Science students, under academic supervision, to facilitate the successful completion of their studies. You should engage in the scholarship necessary to ensure good practice in teaching and to apply appropriate levels of knowledge in the subject areas to be taught.

We are currently looking for Demonstrators to support the following modules:

  • Introduction to Research Methods (Level 4: Wednesday 6-9pm) from 10 January 2024 to 3 July 2024 (excluding 14 February and 29 May 2024 due to reading week, and one other week TBD in June 2024). Duties include assisting students as they work through pre-prepared pen and paper / computer based introductory research methods exercises including tasks about descriptive statistics, simple inferential statistical tests (t-test, chi-square, one way anova), parts of a lab report, writing a pre-registration. There will also be opportunities to mark lab reports (one per term) for an additional payment.

  • Research Methods 1 (Level 5; Mondays 6-9pm) from 8 January 2024 to 18 March 2024 (excluding 12 February due to reading week).

  • Principles of Experimental Psychology (level 7; Fridays 6-9pm), from 12 January 2024 to 22 March 2024 (excluding 16 February 2024 due to reading week and 23 Feb– 1 March. Duties include assisting in the supervision of group projects. Previous experience of working as a Demonstrator supporting research methods courses would be beneficial in this role.

    Working pattern; various; three hours a week.

    Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £23.39 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6. Marking is paid separately for these roles.

    Most individuals undertaking these roles will be employed as part of their general academic development to obtain practical teaching experience and will be undertaking this work independently but in parallel with postgraduate studies. In addition to the criteria specified in the Job Pack, candidates must have:

  • A first degree in Psychology or an equivalent relevant qualification
  • Advanced experience in using a range of statistical techniques and report writing suitable for quantitative psychological science research
  • A good working knowledge of SPSS
  • A willingness to engage in reflective practice.
