Primary Purpose of the Position

To actualize this commitment, WSSU seeks a visionary leader to serve as its Dean for the College of Arts, Sciences, Business and Education. Reporting to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean has the unique responsibility of positioning the academic unit for student success and positive societal impact. The Dean must be an empathetic, equity-minded leader who works collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders to articulate a vision and mission for the College that aligns with and supports the university's strategic plan. The Dean must also partner with constituents to construct and execute a College- level strategic plan that complements the university's focus on student success, equity, social and economic mobility, entrepreneurship, and innovation.

As the academic unit's Chief Financial Officer, the Dean is responsible for managing the College's financials and aligning budgetary appropriations with the unit's strategic priorities. The Dean is also responsible for leading the College's academic programs, ensuring quality of academic degrees as measured by accreditation, academic program review, and student degree completion. As a listener and responsive critical thinker, the Dean must cultivate a climate within the unit that fosters effective teaching, interdisciplinary research and scholarship, and employee and student engagement. Additionally, the Dean must support faculty and staff development, establish strategic partnerships, and build intentional alliances with two-year and four-year institutions of higher education, industry, and the external community. As a member of a community of scholars and leaders at WSSU, the Dean must participate in university-wide and community-based committees as well as in professional activities on local, regional, and national levels to maintain and improve one's professional and scholarly development.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate or terminal degree in one of the disciplines in the College from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
  • Qualify for appointment at the rank of professor with tenure.
  • At least five years of experience as an administrator in higher education (e.g., department chairperson, associate or assistant dean, and so forth) or as an administrator in a related business or industry.
  • Demonstrated experience with budgeting and financial management.
  • Demonstrated evidence navigating processes to attain or sustain institutional regional accreditation or discipline-specific academic accreditation.
  • Evidence of conducting scholarship, research, or creative activity as well as evidence of mentoring faculty in these areas preferably at a four-year institution of higher education.
  • Extensive record of scholarly achievement in teaching, research and creative activity, and service at an accredited four-year institution of higher education.
  • Experience procuring sponsored research and administering extramurally funded grants.
  • Demonstrated evidence of successfully managing personnel which includes recruiting, supporting, and retaining diverse faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrated experience growing enrollment at a four-year institution of higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to fundraise, engage in university advancement, and provide stewardship of financial resources procured by university donors.
  • Proven ability of leveraging diversity, equity, and inclusion within an organization to foster innovation and creativity.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal and intercultural communication skills.
  • Experience with media and public relations.
  • Evidence of proficiency with various technological tools that impact student engagement, faculty and staff development, and business operations.

  • Specific Job Duties

    The Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, Business and Education will have responsibility for performing the following job duties:

    Program Administration

  • Provide leadership, direction, and overall administration for the development, coordination, and implementation of programs, activities, and professional services.
  • Formulate, initiate, implement, and interpret policies relating to the operation of the College and the academic departments within the unit.
  • Establish strategic vision for the unit and articulate goals and objectives that will advance the College to achieve its outcomes.
  • Recruit and retain high-performing faculty and staff who are committed to the vision and mission of the unit and the University.
  • Partner with Enrollment Management, department chairs, and other constituents to develop strategies to recruit, enroll, and retain diverse high-performing students, particularly from rural and low-income geographic regions, to ensure on-time degree completion.
  • Promote diversity, social justice, and inclusivity as well interdisciplinarity within the School.
  • Student Success

  • Support departments, centers, and programs within CASBE to integrate high impact practices (e.g., internships, research, study abroad) into curricular and co-curricular opportunities.
  • Partner with divisions, departments, and units across the university, particularly Student Affairs and the University College, to support student success initiatives.
  • Foster an environment of continuous improvement within the College whereby faculty and staff collect and analyze data on student performance then engage in explicit actions to improve instruction, programming, and activities that benefit student outcomes.
  • Incorporate programs, interventions, and mechanisms that assist students with their academic achievement and professional development.
  • Work collaboratively with other academic deans, unit and center directors, and other constituents to strategize, plan, execute, assess, and evaluate programs or activities that promote student success across undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
  • Budgetary Management and Personnel Supervision

  • Manage and navigate an enrollment growth funding model to advance the unit's vision.
  • Plan, allocate, and adjust budgetary appropriations to align with the unit's strategic priorities.
  • Advocate for fiscal and human capital that positions the College to achieve its mission.
  • Partner with the Office of Faculty Affairs to recruit and retain talented faculty and staff whose skills align with the university's Faculty for the Future Framework.
  • Invest in the professional development of the unit's administrators (e.g., associate deans, department chairs), faculty, and staff to foster entrepreneurship, innovation, and sponsored research.
  • Advancement, Stewardship, and Public Relations

  • Cultivate new relationships with potential partners and nurture existing partnerships.
  • Collaborate with University Advancement, the academic departments, and other constituents to develop strategy for fundraising to meet the College's vision and mission.
  • Establish Advisory Boards for the College, academic departments, and research centers.
  • Work collaboratively with university administrators and faculty to create, schedule, and present workshops on undergraduate research to undergraduates.
  • Partner with Integrated Marketing Communications to develop a bold and effective communications strategy that continuously highlights the achievements and contributions of the College's faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners.
