Position Title Dean of Students Contract Length 12 months Class Summary

The Dean of Students provides alignment and direction to student-facing programmatic efforts across Student Services. Serves as the lead for involvement and student development efforts across the College. Responsible for fiscal, human resources and program oversight for Student Life, TRIO Student Support Services and Upward Bound, Veterans Services, Judicial Affairs, Career Center, and Student Resources/Community Resource Center. The Dean of Students is responsible for creating programming and activities that encourage a safe environment for students that is conducive to learning, contributes to their intellectual, emotional, academic development. Offers student growth and professional development opportunities through increased classroom, campus, and community engagement initiatives. Provides leadership and effective management over policy reviews and ensures compliance with all applicable regulations and guidelines.

Minimum Education/Training/Experience

- Masters in Counseling, Student Services, or equivalent

- Minimum of 5 years experience in supervisory position in higher education, preferably a community college

- Experience in student conduct, advisement, counseling, career, TRiO, student life or other similar areas

Preferred Education/Training/Experience

- Doctorate preferred

  • Budget and planning monitoring
  • Training program principles, practices and techniques.
  • Applicable computer programs and equipment.
  • Monitoring and evaluating staff.
  • Facilitating effective group interactions.
  • Negotiating and solving problems.
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, the general public, etc sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

    Oral proficiency in Spanish

    Job Duties

    - Supervise Student Life, TRiO Student Support Services and Upward Bound, Veterans Services, Judicial Affairs, Career Center, and Student Resources/Community Resource Center, following guidelines of each department including hiring, training, conducting performance evaluations and making discipline recommendations.

    - Investigate and coordinate adjudication of violations of the Student Code of Conduct.

    - Manage student concerns and engage in mediation between students and college personnel.

    - Provide leadership for the implementation of the institutional effectiveness system for Student Services departments. Coordinate and recommend modifications and/or changes in the procedures, policies and forms for Student Services departments. Supervises the development and delivery of Student Services outreach efforts related to involvement and engagement.

    - Represent Student Services on various committees and participates in campus-wide research efforts to assess ways to enhance student success.

    - Coordinates with staff, faculty, and community agencies in the provision of student services.

    - Oversee all departmental budgets and expense and revenue reports to ensure appropriate and cost effectiveness.

    - Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

    Physical Requirements

    Frequent walking and standing. Positions in this class typically require: stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

    Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
