SUMMARY/SCOPE:

The dean provides leadership for the academic programs in the Holland School of Science and Mathematics and supervises a dozen full-time faculty and a similar number of adjuncts. The Holland School offers bachelor's degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Physical Science, and Mathematics, and minors in Environmental Science, Geology, and Physics. It is in the process of developing an Engineering program. Leadership is needed in the form of planning, development, and implementation of all academic programs within the school. The successful candidate will need to have excellent communication skills and to be able to work closely with other deans and university administrators. The dean is responsible for the preparation of comprehensive annual reports for the HSU Board of Trustees and accrediting agencies. The dean will work with foundations, organizations, and donors of the Holland School to promote growth of endowment and support. Active participation in state and national professional organizations is encouraged.

Manage academic resources to advance the school's academic standing and the University's Mission.

Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and University constituencies.

Support faculty in ways that enhance teaching, research, and scholarship.

Lead efforts in strategic planning, establishing outcomes, and assessment leading to continuous improvement of institutional effectiveness.

Possess an informed understanding of the challenges facing Christian higher education in the twenty-first century and an openness to innovation to meet those challenges.

Demonstrate leadership ability.

Harness technology in the teaching/learning environment.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The dean will supervise four department heads, twelve full-time faculty, roughly a dozen adjunct faculty, staff, and student workers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES (Language, Mathematical, Reasoning and Computer Skills):

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administration, faculty, students and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables. COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software; spreadsheet software; and Internet software.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Doctorate in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering required.

Excellent teaching and communication skills required.

This position is a non-tenure track 12- month appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This job is sedentary in nature. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods while performing office and computer operations. Occasionally will be required to stand; walk and stoop and/or kneel.

Occasional trips across campus from one building to another may be required.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 - 25 pounds.

Must be able to operate standard laboratory equipment.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and explosives; and may work near moving mechanical parts at times.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position is a Full-Time Exempt Level position with a teaching load at the Hardin-Simmons University campus. Must be willing to relocate to Abilene, Texas, or the surrounding area to teach in-person classes on the HSU Campus.

Occasional travel may be required for student evaluation/sponsorship and professional development.

Additional travel may be required on occasion for training workshops and/or professional conferences, etc.

Must have and maintain a valid Class C Driver's License and maintain a clear driving record to be insurable under the university liability policy.

Must be able to drive to complete work assignments on and off campus, as needed.
