The DCVPA K-8 English as Second Language (ESL) Teacher is responsible for helping students learn and provide guidance to teacher, administrator and families based on the individual needs of a student. Is responsible for creating and implementing individual language goas for students who will benefit from language support. Duties include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Ensure all practices and procedures within English Language Learners (ELL) Teachers Manual including programming guide and required forms are followed
  • Follow and ensure all rules, policies and procedures of D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy, along with state and federal regulations pertaining to school issues; and in relationship to the ESL program
  • Lead the ELL Consult Team to ensure student needs are meet
  • Create a schedule that best meets the needs of the language students
  • Connect ELL families with school events
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    Bachelor's degree in education with valid teaching certificate in North Carolina in the area of English as Second Language (ESL).

    Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language
  • Proven record of instructional success in the ESL classroom
  • Fluent bilingual in English/Spanish
  • Valid North Carolina teaching license or eligible to hold such license
  • Demonstrated growth on the NC Educator Effectiveness Rating Scale or comparable metric that aligns to North Carolina Teaching standards
  • Experience mentoring pre-service or beginning teachers
  • Ability to comply with confidentiality requirements in local, state and federal policies and statutes
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Second Language Education techniques and approaches
  • Demonstrated success working with and promoting diverse populations and students who have historically struggled academically and socially
  • Ability to demonstrate functional knowledge of computers and all aspects of the Microsoft Office Professional software programs and Google Classroom
  • Ability to comply with confidentiality requirements in local, state and federal policies and statutes
  • Ability to maintain a structured classroom environment that promotes and enhances inquiry-based learning
  • Ability to constantly monitor the safety and wellbeing of students
  • Ability to co-teach, plan, support, and work collaboratively with candidate/student teachers
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing with school personnel, students, and parents
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and accomplish specific tasks as requested
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignment
  • Willing to engage in family and community outreach
  • Required Certifications or Licensures

    D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy supports the academic, social, and emotional growth of students in kindergarten through eighth grades.     The Watson College of Education (WCE) (www. uncw.edu/ed) is a rapidly growing college with over 65 tenure-track faculty members working in undergraduate and master's programs in the Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle, Literacy and Special Education and the Department of Instructional Technology, Foundations and Secondary Education, and master's and doctoral programs in the Department of Educational Leadership.
