The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC), the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), and the Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI- RC). The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as a Data Software Engineer to support projects facilitating the Digital Transition/Transformation of companies and public organizations and pursue Research & Development (R&D) in the areas of High-Performance Data Analytics (HPDA), large-scale Data Science (DS) and Machine Learning (ML). The successful candidate will join the research and engineering teams, of the DiGiNN project (https: // www. DiGiNN.eu/), and the EuroCC-2 project (https: // eurocc.cyi.ac.cy/). This position offers a unique opportunity for working in exciting R&D activities using state-of-the-art High-Performance Computing (HPC), “Big Data”, DS/ML methods, and interacting with both researchers and users of these technologies.

The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of two years, with the possibility of renewal subject to performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

Participate in collaborative (DiGiNN, EuroCC) projects with academia/industry/public sector.

Conduct Digital Maturity Assessments

Liaise with end users to determine their operational needs to perform design of bespoke solutions

Provide consultation services for industry/public sector, including proof of concept projects in at least one of the following: HPC, “Big Data”, and/or DS/ML

Optimize and adapt existing software to benefit from HPC, “Big Data”, and/or DS/ML

Address users' application issues by providing high-level support

Collect and analyse data from various application domains.

Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, such as researchers, product managers, backend engineers, data scientists.

Contribute to project reports and deliverables.

Participate in training and user-support events.

Develop novel methods in any of the following: HPDA, machine learning/AI, data-driven computational science.

Required Qualifications

MSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science or any other relevant field

Understanding of fundamental concepts in HPC, Data Management & Analytics, DS/ML

Proficient programming skills (preferably in Python) and some experience with at least one of the following: a) parallel programming, b) data analytics, c) deep learning frameworks

Experience with processing large and noisy datasets

Ability to present technical concepts to non-technical users

Understanding and application of good software engineering practices

Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team while showing initiative and independence.

Excellent knowledge of the English language (written and verbal).

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in parallel programming (MPI, OpenMP, CUDA)

Experience with git repository

Experience with Linux-based systems

Previous experience in a research/academic institution

Previous experience in writing technical reports

Experience in a similar position
