Special Instructions to Applicants Southern Miss is an R1 Carnegie Research University – Highest Research Activity and is the premier university in the Gulf South for marine science. The Division of Marine Science is located at the John C. Stennis Space Center, which is a “federal city” that boasts the world's largest concentration of oceanographers. The successful candidate will be required to pass a NASA background security check to work at Stennis, and a USM employment background check. Job Summary We are searching for an enthusiastic scientist to help us with the management, storage and accessibility of ocean and hydrographic data. The Hydrographic Science Research Center (HSRC) continuously collects hydrographic, geophysical and environmental data, which require to be adequately formatted, archived and managed. The applicant will be responsible primarily for maintaining a web base data repository and developing a query-indexed database. This position will be based primarily at the HSRC but the applicant will be required to work in close contact with Dr. Hill and Dr. Jones at the Institute for Advanced Analytics and Security at the Hattiesburg Campus.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • High level design, engineering, and development of software for geospatial data analysis, including AI/ML integration within ArcGIS or similar software suites, given basic guidelines for software deliverables.
  • Development of GIS database for multiple format ocean data (e.g. satellite, video, CTD, etc.) and data repository in NoSQL-based metadata library with federated data storage.
  • Conduct in-depth analyses (including AI/ML) on large scale data related to contracts with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to include development of reporting pipelines and integration with existing data systems.
  • Develop new data management methods for deployment in current NOAA and USM systems for ocean data, and creation of data pipelines for analyses products for decision-makers and scientists within NOAA.
  • All other duties as assigned, particularly in the areas of Engineering and Development, Data Collection and Analysis, Equipment Maintenance and Calibration, Research Support and Collaboration, and Safety and Compliance as relevant to the position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    A bachelors degree from an Accredited College or University in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics (or related areas), plus 4 years of experience working with (storing, retrieving, and visualizing) data sets.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Highly motivated, self-learner, and technically inquisitive
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Detailed knowledge of programming and computer engineering best practices
  • In-depth understanding of relevant programming languages, including Python, Scala, C, and Shell Script
  • Familiarity with coding and program design such as SQL and NoSQL
  • Good collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Preferred Qualifications

    A Master degree from an Accredited College or University in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics (or related areas) plus at least 2 years previous work experience in telecommunication companies, software engineering companies or “big data” management companies with responsibilities including communication with stakeholders, and making strategic architecture and design decisions for creating capabilities using data with thousands of records across multiple data sources. Professional Certification from Google, Microsoft, or similar companies that provide cloud services.
