Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.

The scientific IT group is part of Empa corporate services department. We are a team of software engineers, HPC and data management specialists who develop solutions to support researchers in their daily work.

You will lead the software development effort for Empa's contribution to the Swiss EM Network project. This is a Swiss-wide initiative to develop a data hub and the necessary workflows and metadata standards for the management and sharing of Electron Microscopy data (EM) collected across multiple institutions.

Your primary task will be the integration of existing Empa EM facilities in the network. This includes participating in the consensus process to define data and metadata standards as well as the implementation of data collection and processing pipelines integrated with the central data hub.

Additionally to these activities, you will participate in internal projects aligned to your skills and interests as needs arise.

  • Data engineering and software development for the Swiss EM Net project with the aim to integrate Empa EM facilities with the central data hub, allowing the automated collection and upload of measurement data and metadata
  • Participation in the process to define metadata standards for the Swiss EM community
  • Contribution to the development of data management solutions within Empa
  • General software development and data science activity for internal customers
  • Your profile

This position suits a data engineer with strong software engineering skills, particularly with backend systems and data pipelines. Requirements

  • A degree in computer science or in engineering or scientific discipline with strong computational background
  • Experience in developing data pipelines or backend systems
  • Multi-year experience in a programming language such as python or java
  • Willingness to acquire new technical skills
  • Good communication and self-organization skills
  • Knowledge of devops practices (git, CI/CD, containerization)
  • Team player
  • Good English skills required, German is a plus
  • For further information about the position please contact Dr Eleni Pratsini, [email protected] and visit our websites www. empa.ch and Empa- Video

We look forward to receiving your online application including a letter of motivation, CV, diplomas with transcripts and contact details of two referees. Please upload the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered.
