The Department of Political Science has an open climate that encourages involvement in broader societal debates. Research areas of specialization include elections, democracy, corruption, governance, globalisation, environmental politics, and European studies. The Department hosts research programmes such as the QoG Institute, Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), Centre for Collective Action Research, (CeCAR), Governance and Local Development (GLD), and the Swedish National Election Studies Programme. We offer several degree programmes at undergraduate, Master's and doctoral level, as well as freestanding courses. Education is provided in both Swedish and English. We have a total of 1 300 students and a staff of about 140. The Department is centrally located in the city of Gothenburg. The Program on Governance and Local Development (GLD), directed by Professor Ellen Lust, is a research program aiming to explain variation in governance and local development in an effort to promote human welfare globally. The Department of Political Science is now searching for additional expertise to join GLD's data team full-time for an appointment of 12 months.

Job assignments

The main assignment is to assist the program researchers with survey creation, data collection, and data handling. This includes, among other things:

  • Coding surveys using SurveyToGo (STG)
  • Setting up survey logic
  • Managing Quotas
  • Setting Quality Control features
  • Reviewing survey for errors
  • Working with STG Technical Support to resolve issues and incorporate new features
  • Providing daily monitoring during data collection
  • Creating a daily monitoring report template in RMarkdown
  • Running the report daily and sending to survey partners
  • Training other program researchers in the use of the RMarkdown file
  • Working closely with survey implementation partners to ensure high-quality data collection
  • Developing enumerator training materials
  • Attending enumerator trainings to answer questions
  • Investigating irregularities during data collection
  • Cleaning and preparing data for use by program researchers
  • Writing code to clean the raw data
  • Creating codebooks for the data
  • Merging datasets
  • Providing basic data summaries (means, proportions, frequencies, bar charts, etc.)
  • Maintaining GLD's datasets
  • Storing and documenting data (raw and clean) appropriately
  • Creating public versions of datasets and uploading to the appropriate platforms
  • Implement GDPR-compliant data transfers
  • Other assignments include collaborating with the data team to address data- centered issues at GLD.

    The job is performed in close collaboration with the GLD team, including the program statistician, program director, project coordinator, post-doctoral research fellows, PhD students, interns, and affiliated faculty around the world.

    Qualifications

    We are looking for you who have the necessary skill set to successfully carry out the job assignments as described.

    The following qualifications are required :

  • A degree in Statistics, Data Analytics, Data Science or other relevant field OR equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated skills in data processing, including:
  • cleaning data
  • merging data
  • creating documentation/metadata
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the statistical software R, including:
  • Using existing packages
  • Writing your own code and/or functions
  • Debugging your own code
  • Creating data visualizations
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new types of software
  • Demonstrated skills in problem solving/troubleshooting
  • Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and confidently in English, verbal and written
  • The following qualifications (listed in order of importance), while not required, are advantageous :

  • Ability to speak, read, and write Arabic
  • Previous experience with survey design and creation (SurveyToGo, Qualtrics, Microsoft Forms, etc.)
  • Previous experience with data monitoring
  • Previous experience using RMarkdown
  • Previous experience operating under GDPR or training in GDPR
  • Previous experience in a research project, particularly with a quantitative focus
  • Previous experience using SharePoint
  • Previous experience using Microsoft Teams
  • Previous experience working with an interdisciplinary/international team
  • You must be able to work well with a large, fluid, and diverse team. You must have the flexibility to adjust to changing priorities and ask for clarifications and help when needed. You must have an eye for detail, be good at planning, organizing and be a problem solver.

    With the assistance of the program statistician, we expect you to learn new statistical methods and software when necessary. Additionally, you will need to be able to explain new techniques to your fellow researchers. We expect you to have excellent collaboration and communication skills, verbal and written. Fluency in English, conversational and technical, is required since it is the working language of the GLD Program.

    We will make an overall assessment, and the applicant considered to be best qualified to carry out the duties described above will be appointed to the position.

    It is an asset to have worked with the tasks described in the job assignment.
