Research Fellows in Cybersecurity or related areas

(3 posts available)

Grade 7 (£37,099 - £44,263)

Full time, 35 hours per week

Fixed term (for a period of 3 years)

Abertay is a modern university with a global outlook, rooted in its local and national communities. We have made our mark with high quality, well-directed teaching and research, and a stimulating and enriching experience for our students.

Abertay's Security, Equality and Social Justice Research and Knowledge Exchange (RKE) challenge space brings together and develops expertise across the University on issues such as cybersecurity, privacy, data protection, regulation, and governance; human-centred cybersecurity; cyber-dependent and cyber-enabled crimes, criminals, and victims; and ethical hacking. We work with businesses, local and national government, police, third sector, and academic researchers from across the world to develop research that helps protect infrastructures, devices, data, businesses and citizens and enable resilience.

The Researchers will be central to the development of the challenge space research and will make a strong contribution to the intellectual and practical development of cybersecurity at the University. They will each be based within Abertay cyberQuarter, working closely with the Director (Professor Lynne Coventry), the challenge leads, and each other to develop and enable world- leading research and innovation within the challenge space.

The posts will be associated with one of the following research areas:

  • Researcher 1: cybersecurity innovation and technology including malware detection, IOT, security, network intrusion and digital forensics
  • Researcher 2: Cyber-crime and online harms
  • Researcher 3: Human centred, usable and inclusive cybersecurity
  • More detail on the role of the Researchers can be found in the job description.

These posts would suit self motivated candidates who are excited by interdisciplinary working, innovation, and stakeholder impact, and who have the desire to work in a complex interdisciplinary environment on multiple projects. You will develop, lead and sustain your own research, which should be of international standard. You will also support research to be carried out with cyberQuarter partners.

To join us, you will need a relevant PhD or equivalent experience. You'll have a good academic publication record, and experience of funding application processes. You will demonstrate initiative and enthusiasm to develop a coherent research vision to develop your own area of interest and will have the ability to bring new concepts and ideas to the cyberQuarter. You will be a team player who is comfortable working independently and happy to work on joint papers You'll demonstrate the ability to take the initiative when organising resources and delivering projects to deadlines. Your excellent communication and interpersonal skills also equip you to develop strong working relationships with a wide range of cyberQuarter stakeholders and partners, from academia, business, government, and law enforcement.

Candidates shortlisted for interview will be asked to outline their research aspirations in a plan covering the next three years (assuming 50% time on own research), how they map onto Abertay's Interdisciplinary Challenge Space and pooled excellence areas encapsulated in Abertay's RKE Strategy. Applicants should include any plans for work involving non-academic partners if relevant. All successful applicants will be part of the cyberQuarter.

The posts are full-time and funded for three years from October 2024 (an earlier start may be possible).

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status. All appointments are made on merit.
