Job Description

Boston University Virtual is a new unit at Boston University focused on the creation of high-quality online degree and certificate programs. We are seeking a Course Operations Specialist to work collaboratively with learning designers, academic leaders and platform administrators to support the development, build, QA, and launch of new courses and course revisions for new and existing online graduate degree and certificate programs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the concurrent design and development of multiple online course developments, adhering to course blueprints and online course quality standards.
  • Independently, and in collaboration with Platform Administrators, problem- solve learning technology issues.
  • Articulate plans and educate stakeholders.
  • Serve as a member of the course development team, which includes instructional learning designers, subject matter experts, faculty, instructional technologists, and multimedia specialists.
  • Maintain a collaborative relationship and open communication with other members of the learning design and course operations team, as well as with the partner schools and colleges.
  • Initiate and supervise the course builds with the learning management system (Blackboard).
  • Support faculty development and other special projects.
  • Manage project timelines and coordinate with learning designers and academic leaders to meet project deliverables.
  • Support learning designers and schools and colleges in developing timelines, resourcing, assigning tasks, monitoring and reporting progress, and creating regular dashboards.
  • Directly, and in collaboration with student teams, conduct the build, QA process, and weekly launch of courses and programs.
  • Manage and update documentation for design, technology implementation, and delivery elements. Identify and resolve project risks, or escalate issues as needed, in a collaborative and timely fashion.
  • Evaluate emergent requests from Faculty and other stakeholders from BU schools/colleges.
  • Determine capacity within BUV and make recommendations on course of action.
  • Participate in the design, test, and implementation of new technology solutions.
  • Cultivate collaborative and professional relationships with teaching teams and other stakeholders to improve course development timelines and delivery experience.
  • Required Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education or related experience.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years in an academic environment, supporting the design and development of online instruction.
  • Experience working with educational technology tools, including learning management systems and task management systems.
  • Experience collaborating with a diverse set of stakeholders, preferably in a higher education setting in support of online learning experiences.
  • Basic understanding of course design and underlying pedagogical principles.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills; familiarity with common task or project management tools (MS Teams, Trello, Asana or similar) preferred.
  • An adaptable mindset to work as part of a growing team in the shifting landscape of the institution and higher education in general.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Dependability and meticulous attention to detail.
