    About Us Since opening its doors in 1965, Tacoma Community College has provided a high- quality, affordable education to more than 500,000 people. Serving Tacoma, Gig Harbor, the Key Peninsula, online students and the women's prisons, TCC educates about 11,000 students annually.     Basic Assignment

    This position is a member of a professional team working in the College's Counseling and Advising Center. The counselor will provide confidential career development, personal counseling, educational planning and support services to a wide variety of prospective and enrolled students. This position reports to the Dean of Retention and Student Success.

    As a college representative, the individual may work closely with community agencies and resources that provide additional academic, vocational and personal support services.

    Essential Functions

  • Provide 20- 25 hours per week, of personal, career, and educational counseling for individual students.
  • Plan, organize and facilitate group counseling and workshops for a diverse student population.
  • Provide and coordinate special support services.
  • Perform in-person and telehealth services.
  • Perform substance abuse identification and limited intervention activities.
  • Participate in division and college activities and perform other duties normally assigned to faculty members.
  • Maintain current knowledge and practical skills in counseling and cultural diversity.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Provide student advocacy.
  • Provide crisis intervention and response to urgent student needs.
  • Follow social distancing guidelines while counseling students.
  • Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling or closely related field, including a supervised counseling practicum.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Qualified to register as an Affiliated Counselor in the State of Washington.
  • Preferred Qualification

  • Ability to promote student retention and success with evidence of positive collaboration with faculty, students and staff.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of a community college
  • Experience counseling with diverse client populations to include people of color, veterans, people with disabilities, LGBTQ students, under-resourced students and students with mental health issues.
  • Qualified to register as an agency affiliated counselor in the State of Washington.
  • Conditions of Employment

  • Successfully complete a criminal history background check prior to employment.
  • Ability to teach a full-time teaching schedule with a set schedule.
  • Proof of completed COVID-19 Vaccination is required upon hiring and employment at TCC.

  • Terms of Employment

    This is a part time faculty position contracted on a quarterly basis. Classes assigned to the successful candidate may be on campus, hybrid online, or fully online with an online learning management system (Canvas) component. Evening hours may be required. The salary for the 2021/2022 academic year is dependent on education and experience as required by the Faculty Negotiated agreement, which includes class preparation time, weekly office hours, scheduled class time, grading tasks, and final exam days. A collective bargaining agreement exists, and membership in the TCC Federation of Teachers or payment of a service fee is available upon hire. Flexibility is required to meet the needs of the department. Degrees must be from accredited colleges or universities recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and verified by National Student Clearinghouse.
