Position title: Cortez Lab: Research Specialist (Junior - Associate Specialist)

Percent time: Full-time (100%).

Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications.

Position duration: Initial appointments will be for one year. Reappointment may be considered contingent upon the availability of work and appropriate funding.

Position description

The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for research specialists for the Cortez Lab. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Valerie Cortez, the research specialists will contribute to a research program focused on enteric viruses and gut immunity by assisting in laboratory operations and research.

Duties will include ordering supplies, maintaining instruments, supporting cell culture and mouse colony maintenance, as well as planning and performing experiments and interpreting data. The research specialists will also manage a chemical inventory and biosafety records. Selected candidates will be expected to stay up-to-date with the scientific literature and contribute to manuscripts, presentations, and grant proposals as needed. The position requires incumbents to employ excellent attention to detail and successfully work as members of a diverse, interdisciplinary research team. Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • B.S. or B.A. degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in molecular biology, microbiology, cell biology, or a related field.
  • Experience using general molecular and cellular biology techniques, including: nucleic acid extraction and quantification, PCR/RT/PCR/qPCR, blot analysis, and cell culture.
