The Coordinator of Community Engagement is responsible for developing and
implementing Community engagement, service and immersion programs that advance
students' experience and understanding of the Catholic and Marianist mission
of St. Mary's University. The Office of Community Engagement develops and
promotes programs grounded in Catholic Social Teaching, justice and solidarity
that advance the mission and identity of the university and will focus
programming on local service and engagement initiatives, national and global
justice concerns and will work to implement and expand programming that
connects the understanding of faith and justice in light of our Marianist
charism and Catholic identity.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Promotes awareness in support of community engagement, community service
and outreach, Catholic Social Teaching, social justice, and the Common
Good.
Plans and implements annual Community Engagement Week activities and
programs for the campus community.
Assists in the planning and hosting of the annual Volunteer and Post
Graduate Service Fair; serves as advisor to upper-class students
discerning post-graduate service.
Serves as the primary service advisor, meeting one-on-one with students
and proactively guiding Registered Student Organizations towards potential
and best fit service projects.
Oversees logistical components of service-learning, including data
tracking (using Community engagement software system, GivePulse),
classroom presentations, working with students to troubleshoot concerns
with placements, and general mentorship as needed for students involved in
service-learning courses.
Guides Community Engagement student interns in planning and promotion of
on-going service events and opportunities through GivePulse.
Assists with coordination of the Community Based Work Study (CBWS)
Program. This includes selection of and maintaining relationships with
non-profit CBWS partners, recruiting for and selection of students for
open positions, developing opportunities for reflection with participating
students in the program and making regular site visits to non-profit
partners.
Oversees and develops alternative spring break experiences (both domestic
and international), which focus on building global community in
solidarity and faith while examining issues of social injustice in light
of our Catholic and Marianist identity.
Works to grow existing domestic immersion experiences to include
opportunities offered at least three times per academic year.
Assists department leadership with the planning and preparation of
existing summer service opportunities including the Summer of Service
program; works with office staff to expand these opportunities moving
forward.
Works in collaboration with University Ministry and Student Life to offer
educational opportunities focused on social concerns and issues of
justice. This includes but is not limited to film series and discussions,
brown bag lunch discussions, voter registration/faithful citizenship
initiatives, hunger and homelessness awareness week events, etc.
Attends regular Community Engagement professional staff meetings
Participates in university-related student activities, including
orientation, new student recruitment activities, commencement, and
convocation activities
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required;
Master's degree preferred.
One (1) to three (3) years of related experience required; experience
in an institution of higher education or the non-profit field preferred.
Prior experience working with student and faculty populations in immersion
programs, justice and advocacy efforts, community engagement, student
organizations or other experiential learning programs, including
demonstrated understanding of Catholic Social Teaching, is preferred.
Must clear and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
Must be able to work weekend, evening, and late hours are periodically
necessary.
Must have valid driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance and
personal injury insurance; or have a self-reliant source of transportation
to conduct business on a daily basis.
Must have the ability to demonstrate advanced skills in MS Office (Word,
Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), Teams, Zoom, or similar online/virtual
meeting platforms.
Must have ability to clearly and concisely communicate information
graphically, verbally, and in writing to diverse audiences including
institutional leadership, faculty and staff, and external constituencies;
strong public relations and customer service skills with an ability to
implement diplomacy and discretion at all times; ability to work
effectively with communities across the university.
Must have high ethical standards and a strong sense of confidentiality;
ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines; thrive in a complex
work environment; display solid problem solving and interpersonal skills;
work well independently and as part of a team.
Must have a high attention to detail and be able to organize workflow,
coordinate activities, balance simultaneous projects without loss of
efficiency in a multi-tasked environment, and manage multiple priorities
to meet deadlines.
Actively supports the delivery of services and programs within the
framework of the Marianist mission: educating for formation of faith;
providing an integral, quality education; educating in family spirit;
educating for service justice and peace; and educating for adaptation and
change.
Experience in long-term service program or comparable service experience
is preferred.
Bilingual Preferred (English/Spanish with the ability to understand and
to make one's self understood to Spanish speaking individuals).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Working conditions are in an office environment and university campus
setting. Must be able to move across the university campus to conduct day
to day business.
While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to
sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and
use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and
occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision,
distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Frequently communicates with others using approved technological
resources; must be able to exchange accurate information through
designated systems within a timely manner.
Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery.
